We're thankful it's Friday, especially since we spent our Thursday night in the comfort of two C's we quite enjoy here at Kanon, cocktails and musician Cee Lo. Last night at the W hotel, Cee Lo performed songs from his new release entitled "The Lady Killer". With such a great turnout and performance, we turned to Friend of Kanon, David Cho from The Awl to give us the low-down on Cee Lo's performance, and best of all, the people-watching, at this Midtown fete. Here, David's take on the night:

I think one of my favorite things to do at a party is people watch - specifically getting to examine the cross-section of people who are there on any given night. Ideally it's a real hodgepodge of social groups, a juxtaposition of a bunch of different and interesting people who would otherwise never all find themselves within the same enclosed space with a single, unified goal - in this case, to see Cee-Lo perform (Now, I wasn't there when it happened, but I imagine that this is also very comparable to what the first boats to Ellis Island were like. I am almost entirely certain that I am not wrong about this!).

So what was the crowd like at last night's W Happenings performance of Cee Lo's new album "The Lady Killer"? Well, in no particular order, here's who was there: Cee Lo, Asher Roth, a bunch of people who work at Atlantic Records, GQ Editor-In-Chief Jim Nelson, a girl that used to sort-of date (you know what I'm talking about) one of my friends who I hadn't seen since they had "broken up," Omarion from the popular, early-Aughts urban boyband B2K who was also the star of the feature film 'You Got Served,' popular style blogger Carol Han of Milk and Mode, and also, most importantly, a really scary looking blonde couple. Seriously, this description does not effectively articulate how freaky looking they were, because, honestly, they scared me shitless. Plus, the guy part of the couple had a LOT of facial hair. Like, bright blonde facial hair. I really can't handle things like that.

You know what was great though? Cee Lo! What a happy, jolly, looking guy. I bet it's fun to be friends with him. He was wearing a bright white suit, and there were these lights that would shine directly on him so that it looked sort of like he was just a floating head. This made him look like an emoticon. It was awesome.

(Sidebar: Did anyone ever see the episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen with Cee Lo's daughter? It was insane! She was the absolute worst! It would not surprise me if she started dating someone who had a beard of bright blonde facial hair. In fact, it wouldn't even surprise me if she grew her own bright blonde facial hair! That is how disparagingly I think of her! This sweeping judgment of her character is no doubt completely accurate in regards to her real life personality, as the only context I have for knowing her is a 30-minute reality show on MTV from when she was a teenager. Good one, me.)

One of the things I thought while watching Cee Lo awesomely perform was how there might be someone in the room who mistakenly thought they were going to see the rapper Skee-Lo. This person was probably short, and I imagine he was very disgruntled at the fact that he got all dressed up to come hear a live rendition of his short person anthem about wanting to dunk basketballs and date tall girls, only to find out that he would be forced to see a multiple-Grammy Award winning artist do an intimate set of a currently unreleased album instead. This guy was probably SO pissed! Really though, it's his own fault, he probably should have read the invitation e-mail a little closer, then he would have gauged his expectations a little more realistically.
