We can't stress it enough – the Millers (that would be designer Chrissie, music blogger Diana, and astrologer-mom Susan of AstrologyZone) may just be the coolest family. Ever. So when all three headed to LA for Chrissie's month-long Arts & Leisure pop-up shop, we knew we had to get in on the action. Diana spent the night at the shop scouting the creative East Coast talent for us, which comes in the form of awesome wares from NY-based designers, jewelers and artists. Here's a peek at Diana's Arts & Leisure experience–she even tapped Mom for a few astrological shopping tips.
Read on for Diana's take:
Put my friends in a room for long enough, and at some point without fail the conversation will lead to one topic. It's the age-old debate that no matter how many hours we spend talking about, never seems to result in a definitive winner: New York vs LA.
Now that I have had the opportunity to experience life on both coasts, I've come to terms with the fact that no matter how much I love LA, there are two things i'll forever miss about New York – the culture and my family.
Lucky for me, this past Friday night they both came to me at an event celebrating my sister's pop-up store, Arts & Leisure. My mom, astrologist Susan Miller, flew out to host the party, making it a true family affair. If there's one thing us Millers know how to do, it's throw a party! The room was packed with friends, familiar faces like Lake Bell and Frankie Rayder, as well as many Arts & Leisure contributors like Scott Campbell and A-Ron Bondaroff. A stylish crowd of people surrounded my mother the entire night trying to talk to her – a scene I've grown accustomed to since everyone who knows her is obsessed with her!
My mother wasn't the only one in the room who had a busy night though; bartenders worked double time to meet the demand for delicious Kanon cocktails. Overall, the party was a huge success. I've always looked to my sister for advice on fashion, and from the looks of the room, I'm not alone.
In case you missed it, I figured I would take advantage of my family connection and give you some exclusive style tips from my mom along with a sneak peek at what's in store. Check it out!
Susan Miller's Shopping Tips for Each Sign:
Aries: Aries rules the face and hair, so if you are Aries, frame your face with beautiful earrings or handsome headbands or hair clips. Some Aries like all kinds of hats and have a knack for choosing just the right one for the occasion. The color most associated with this sign is bright red, the color of courage and passion. Aries is also associated with the whole range of metallic tones, and this sign usually looks quite beautiful in them.
Taurus: Notoriously practical, Taurus will seek out classic pieces that can take her through several seasons. This sign is often happiest wearing neutrals, preferring tones of beige, mushroom, taffy, oatmeal, cream or coffee, navy, pale to charcoal grey, and black. Taurus rules the neck, so a beautiful statement necklace or scarf knotted just the right way would complete her look.
Gemini: Always on the go and multi-tasking, Gemini loves sportswear separates, and this sign takes the layering of tees and sweaters to a new level of sophisticated chic. Gemini is associated closely with accessories because they allow Gemini to quickly switch a look and to express her individual personal style easily.
Cancer: Women Cancers want to look soft and feminine and often enjoy wearing ruffles. Even less "girly" and sentimental Cancers will want to look warm and approachable. Cancer women are also known to be savvy shoppers, looking for classic quality-made investment pieces that can be worn through the years and still look fresh. Cancers favor soft tones of cream, silver, white, silvery tea green, or pale Rocco blue.
Leo: Leo would rather have one quality designer outfit than many lesser off the rack pieces in her wardrobe – and fittingly, Leo tends to take exquisite care of her clothes and jewels. When shopping, Leo can easily spot beautiful workmanship, and she prizes all that is unique and one-of-a-kind. Generally the Leo woman will enjoy wearing rich color and animal prints and has the confidence to carry off dramatic style.
Virgo: In fashion, Virgo knows that details of a garment make all the difference in assembling a look. She will look for fine fabrics, elegant linings, well-made seams and quality buttons, snaps, and closures when choosing a new piece for her wardrobe. Virgo looks for apparel that can be worn through several seasons and that can perform a variety of roles. For that reason, Virgo tends not to choose things that are overly trendy but prefers classic separates that can be worn several ways.
Libra: One trademark of a Libra is their ever-polished, fresh, well-groomed appearance, even after a long day. Libra women usually love jewelry, and in dressing, some Libras often look for delicate touches of ruffles, lace, or other feminine details. Libra does not dress for shock value, for doing so would upset Libra's delicate sensibilities and yearning for harmony and proportion. Thus, Libras prefer soft pastels and muted tones.
Scorpio: Scorpio prefers to wear dark colors of black, eggplant, or maroon. Scorpio's favorite look is one that is magnificently tailored with a classic but elegant fit and cut – very urbane, and quite fashionably current, yet understated.
Sagittarius: In dress, Sagittarius practically invented American ease. The look of a beautifully pressed snow-white cotton shirt paired with elegantly fitted dark jeans is "you." Their fashion style is creative, eclectic, and somewhat idiosyncratic, for a Sagittarius lady will pick up many ideas from visiting various cultures, mixing them into a look that is unique and sophisticated and always her own.
Capricorns: Capricorn women have a refined, classic style that is timeless and effortlessly put-together – precisely right for every occasion. Many Capricorns enjoy the 1940s Hollywood look, complete with cream white charmeuse-and-lace slip, matching cream-silk mules, and hair worn long, in sleek and shiny controlled waves, side part, and wearing red lipstick, with little to no blush. Capricorns also like estate jewelry, real diamond studs, and possibly Grandmother's pearls.
Aquarius: In fashion, like everything else, Aquarius is innovative and creative and follow their own drummer. They need comfort when working on the computer (their favorite place to be) or in the laboratory, but when an Aquarius lady is out with friends, she likes to dress to make a statement. Aquarius is all about the future, and while this sign's lady tends not to follow runway trends, she will wind up predicting them by what she chooses to wear – and what others will eventually copy.
Pisces: Pisces are playful and experimental, so a Pisces woman might combine vintage with brand new things, or the highly expensive with very inexpensive choices ('high-low'). When working on creative projects in private, Pisces often chooses to wear something simple, often black or in a soft color and soft fabric that does not bind. A simple "uniform" allows them to concentrate on their craft. When going out, however, Pisces has a vivid imagination and enjoy creating whimsical "costumes" to suit their different moods, roles, and facets of their personality. No matter what they choose to wear, they have a way of making everything they wear look unexpected and designer-chic.
