    The Hungry Cat, Santa Monica

In case you haven't noticed, we have a new addition to our website, and it's all to make things easier for you. We're talking about our accounts section, which should be your go-to destination every time that question of where you should take your friends this weekend pops into your head. In addition to featuring some of our favorite spots of the moment--like The Hungry Cat, Apotheke and the Shore Club in Miami--it allows you to filter by state, city, and even type to find exactly where to get your cocktail fix or buy your next bottle. That means that whether you need to make a quick liquor run for a party you're throwing tonight, or just want suggestions for a cool local restaurant that serves yours truly--well, it's all here. We're happy to serve you, as always. Cheers!

  • Learn How to Make an Honestly WTF Cocktail

We can do a lot of things. We can throw a great party, we can speak Swedish, we can host an amazing (rain-filled) brunch. When it comes to DIY-ing though, we tend to look to some of our fave FOKs for inspiration (thank god we've got such creative friends.) Erin Chan Coffman and Lauren Kolodny of Honestly WTF, the blog that has DIY-ing on lock, are our go-tos when it comes to getting crafty.

When people ask us about the best part of our jobs, it’s hard to pinpoint just one. It’s nights like last night when we collaborated with designer Alexander Wang for his frat-themed party complete with frat house, Kanon jello shots, beer pong, hot dogs and burgers, and a slew of amazing Wang-inspired cocktails curated by Apotheke, that we realize just how lucky we are. Think we’re exaggerating about how fratastic they were? These cocktails are about as good as it gets. Take a look at the recipes below, your tastebuds will thank you.

    Grunge Goddess

2 oz Black coriander infused Kanon Organic Vodka

    1/2 oz Fresh Lime juice

    1/4 oz Agave Nectar

    3 wheels of Pluot

    2 inches piece of Lemongrass

Muddle the Pluot and Lemongrass in a shaker glass. Measure remaining ingredients into the shaker. Add ice. Shake vigorously and strain into glass. Garnish with a Pluot wheel.

To make infused vodka put 30 coriander seeds and 2 large drops of Nero di Seppia into a 750ml bottle of Kanon Organic Vodka and let sit for 96 hours.

There are some weeks where the days just drone on and on and on. And when they come about, the cure for that is more often than not a strong cocktail. Luckily, that hasn’t been the case this week (minus the strong cocktail part), as we’ve hit the town running between the Free Arts event in Chelsea earlier in the week to last night’s Lykke Li concert at Webster Hall. Not only did we get to hang out with our favorite Swedish singer as she belted out all our favorite hits, including “Sadness Is a Blessing” (did you know we’re in that music video? Because we are. And we won’t hesitate to tell you at every opportunity), but we also got to hang out with our favorite wingwoman, the Man Repeller herself, Leandra Medine. From her Swedish overload (no such thing in our eyes) to the fashion overload, we got MR's take on her Swedish night out on the town:

Last night marked the union of man repellers citywide at Lykke Li's Webster Hall performance in New York City, and despite the torrential downpour still plagued upon us (if I remember correctly, a couple months ago I braved the sky shower in the name of a performance by The Kills at the Soho Mondrian.)

When you hang with us, a Friday afternoon plan can quickly evolve into a Friday night outing…and you know where that leads. Straight into Saturday morning. If there’s one spot we can count on to take our night in the right direction, it’s Apotheke, nestled comfortably in the narrow Chinatown alleyway that is Doyers Street. Legend has it that back in the 20th century, the hidden locale was riddled with Chinese gang wars – but now it's just where we like to go to get our weekend prescription.

The apothecary-style bar features over 250 house cocktails and over 500 bottles of liquor from around the world, and everything is divided into pharmacy-like categories – “Health and Beauty,” “Stress Relievers,” “Aphrodisiacs," “Euphoric Enhancers,” etc. We like to think that not only are they serving up strong spirits, but they're trying to keep us in good spirits, too. But with Kanon behind the bar, that's typically a guarantee. Meet Nicolas O’Connor, Apotheke's mixology extraordinaire who helps us raise our spirits each time we come knocking for a cocktail. Someone's got to be there to cure those nights that've come to a standstill, right? Read up for his take on NYC nightlife from the other side of the bar.

What’s the secret to making a great cocktail?

Creating a balance through the right flavor combinations.

Where do you look to for inspiration when making and creating new drinks?

Through food. When I am eating something with wonderful flavor and texture, it inspires me to try and transfer that feeling to a cocktail.

What makes Apotheke unique or different than other bars in NYC?

Apotheke gives the power to the Mixologist. They are able to create throughout the night based on the needs of the patron.
