  • Make This Weekend: Our Red Dawn Cocktail

So a ton of our friends are embarking on these silly things called cleanses. New year, new you and whatnot. Apparently you’re not supposed to drink while detoxing (insane, we know). Obviously this sort of self-deprivation doesn’t fly with us—so we’ve devised a detox of our own. The “Kanon Cleanse” if you will.

How does it work you ask? Make our “Red Dawn” cocktail, and drink as many as possible. The Red Dawn is filled with red pepper (and antioxidants?) so drinking one of these is akin to eating a salad—but with vodka...even better! What can we say, we’re always looking out for your health. So muddle some peppers this weekend and cleanse the Kanon way.

    Ingredients:

    2 parts kanon
¼ red bell pepper, cut into chunks
    1 thyme sprig
    ¾ part lemon juice
    ½ part simple syrup
    pinch of salt

Muddle thyme and red pepper in shaking tin with salt, lemon juice and simple syrup, add Kanon, shake, strain into collins glass with ice, top with soda, garnish with thyme sprig. Created by Jan Warren at Dutch Kills

Last night was a marathon of events. After a good stretch, we were off into the night. Our first stop for the night? Helping toast makeup guru Bobbi Brown and the launch of her new holiday collection. As if we didn’t feel summer was rushing past us already, we’re already celebrating the fall months. But a party is a party and if vodka is involved, we’re more than okay with it.

We stepped into the uber-swanky Rose Bar to find a crowd of beauty editors pouring over Bobbi’s new collection. We also took a look at it, and trust us- it’s awesome. It’ll be making a lot of ladies very happy in a few months.

Someone once told us that the best thing in the world is to complete something from start to finish and see it through. Well, we love to make cocktails and clearly, love to see them from start to finish, so we had our own cocktail station at the party to get the crowd involved. We gave mini cocktail lessons (courtesy of bartender Jan Warren) involving a silver collins drink with fresh cucumber- it may have been a fall event, but this drink was all summer. With FOK Chrissie Miller as the DJ playing tune after tune we love (seriously, how does she know?) and Kanon Ruby and Kanon Krush drinks on the menu, we were psyched to spend the evening toasting Bobbi. Check out our pictures from the night here, and make sure you check out Bobbi’s holiday collection when it hits stores in the fall.

  • The Best Vodka Gimlet You'll Ever Drink

    Screen_shot_2011-03-04_at_6

We've been eagerly anticipating sharing this recipe with you because it's an especially good one. Dare we say, the best vodka gimlet you'll ever drink? We dare. We went to bed thinking about just how delicious it was, with its perfect combination of spice and refreshing lime, and we woke up craving another. Since you can't find chipotle simple syrup (one of the drink's ingredients) at your local grocery store, we begged mixologist Jan Warren to give us the secret recipe. All you need is a blender and a sauce pan– and a bottle of Kanon– to be able to whip this one up. And trust us– make this at your next gathering and your friends will be begging you for the recipe.

    Smoked Chili Gimlet
    2oz Kanon
    3/4oz lime
    3/4oz chipotle simple syrup
    Garnish with grated chipotle

    Chipotle Simple Syrup:
    1 pint sugar
    1 pint water
    1 dry chipotle pepper

Bring all ingredients to a simmer, completely dissolving sugar. Remove
from heat and let ingredients cool, blend until smooth and enjoy!

Last night we got a taste of Mexico right here in SoHo at Tacombi. The space on Elizabeth Street was decorated to the nines in celebration of Armory Arts Week with colorful paper garlands, tables lined with tissue paper flowers and hand-painted ceramic plates decorated by the host of the night, artist Maya Hayuk (who was dressed in traditional Mexican garb). We munched on tacos, tostadas and tamales, all served from a VW wagon right in the restaurant. But it was the cocktails that kept our attention all night– are you surprised?

The smoked chili gimlet concocted by FOK mixologist Jan Warren was simply put– to die for– and the horchata and hibiscus teas were the perfect mixers to refresh us after a long week. Let's just say, we lined up a few too many times at the cocktail making station to shake up our own chili gimlets. But you don't need to hear any more about how great the night was. Here's a look at the pictures so you can see for yourself.
