You’d think that man repelling would be essentially impossible when cocktails are involved—ahem, social lubrication. But, oh no, not when Leandra Medine the official Man Repeller, is involved. At the Webster Miami's soiree last week, we paired up with our fave harem-pants wearing, pattern-clashing FOK to create the drink least likely to attract attention from the male species. That’s right, behold our bright pink, fruity, cherry-adorned cocktail—The Man Repeller. Check out the recipe below and shake one up this weekend.

For best results, pair with an aggressive arm party and as many items of clothing as possible. The shy need not apply.

    The Man Repeller

    1.5 oz Kanon Organic Vodka
    1/2 oz Triple Sec
1/2 oz of freshly squeezed lemon juice
    1 oz fresh pear juice
    1 oz fresh cranberry juice

Combine ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist and cherry.

Tomorrow is going to be a great day because we are doing something that we've never done before. We're hanging out with Man Repeller, one of our favorite FOKs, (we know, we know, we have done this before so wait for it) in.....MIAMI. That's right. The heat is calling our name and so is an awesome night spent at The Webster hosted by the one and only Leandra Medine. The soiree is in celebration of The Webster's new online store, and the harem-pants-clad blogger will be offering styling tips (and likely jokes) to guests at the shop. What's even more exciting is that we have a special surprise for you in the form of a delicious libation. So if you're based in Miami, well come on down and join the party. If not – don't forget to check the blog next week to get all the details on our special concoction.

  • Leandra Medine's Halloween Costume Round-Up: The Man Repellers vs. The Propellers

    Img_8994

We know Halloween can be notoriously famous for a few things - candy, spirits (both of the ghoulish sort and the distilled sort), and for its costumes - or really, lack thereof. On a night where skimpy costumes take center stage, we wanted to get a different perspective from one of our favorite FOKs and bloggers, Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller. Since she knows a thing or two about unconventional sartorial choices, we asked for her take on her favorite costumes that were both man repelling and man propelling at The Standard's Saints and Sinners party.

As the saying goes, we like to think we're getting better with age. Case in point: topping ourselves once again this year for Halloween at the Standard Hotel, a venue that we think takes the prize for best place to hang on the spooky holiday year in and year out. And with famous faces like power couple Chelsea Handler and Andre Balazs, Russell Simmons, and Adrien Brody weaving in and out of the crowd and dodging waitresses with trays of cotton candy for the taking, (and of course with Kanon behind the bar), the competition have a hard act to follow.

Because two themes are always better than one, The Standard broke down the famous 18th floor into two different sections: saints and sinners– or heaven and hell, if you will. A wall of virtual fire in Le Bain sent reddish sparks of light shooting off the dance club's disco ball while golden apples on trays provided the perfect accessory for photo opps in the Boom Boom Room's more angelic atmosphere. But apparently saints and sinners don't discriminate when it comes to Kanon – our Sinister Minister cocktail with vodka, lemon juice, elderflower, grapefruit, Campari, and soda was served in both heaven and hell making for a night of double trouble. When it comes to The Standard, this is one crew that takes their Halloweens very seriously – the best crowd, the best decor, and of course the best vodka (not that we're biased or anything). Take a look at the Polaroids from the night, and tweet us your favorite costumes.

    Happy Halloween!

  • Man Repelling S/S 2012 Fashion Week

Man Repelling is an art form--something that must be taught by a master and honed to perfection. Good thing we've tapped The Man Repeller herself, veteran FOK Leandra Medine, to give us a rundown of her ways. We were alongside Leandra this Fashion Week, as she got dressed in the morning, prepared for the Alexander Wang and Charlotte Ronson shows, took in presentations (and designer-inspired cocktails, obviously) at MILK Studios, and got her glowstick on at the frat-tastic Alexander Wang after party. So look onwards, Kanon drinkers, and see for yourself what it really feels like to be in the caped shoes of The Man Repeller.

  • The Man Repeller Catches Up With Maria Cornejo

    A8fa9b4e88fa4c4aaa343ae2ded660ea_7

It takes a lot for us to put down our cocktails, but every now and then it's gotta happen. We abandoned the Kanon Bar in favor of some fashion moments in the form of the Maria Cornejo show yesterday afternoon. Good thing our FOK Leandra Medine (of The Man Repeller) was there to hold our hands through the vodka-less situation, and to point out the most man-repelling aspects of the collection. Check out what Leandra had to say, and her thoughts on how we can most successfully repel in the future ('cause people just kind of tend to love Kanon).

Here's what Leandra had to say:

Fashion week is in full swing and while it feels like years since we've last socialized with non-perfectly dressed human specimens of whom are the only breed fully capable of understanding what "oh my God, that Isabel is bananas!" means, it's just day four. And with shows on the hour every hour between Lincoln Center and Milk Studios, it's been hard to keep up with everything. Lucky for you though, Kanon has sweet Fashion Week pull...and lucky for me, I work with them from time to time and so, we've got inside access from the Zero + Maria Cornejo show which presented itself yesterday at 6PM at Milk. Between the chic loose fit sheaths, pops of necessary yellow and some very ambitious and well executed combinations of purple and black leather, we'd say it was a job well done. More sweet than the collection though, the designer herself sat down with us after the show to give us a little bit of insight on what it took to get the collection together, how she'll spend time post show and, in the spirit of alcohol, what she'd call her "Zero drink." Peep the interview below.

Leandra Medine: The show was exceptional. The show was beautiful. I personally loved the bracelet with the neon yellow fur on it.  That was my favorite.

    Maria Cornejo: Yes.

When you focus on quality rather than quantity in life like us, you rarely end up disappointed. And we like to think such is the case for the parties we've been throwing on both coasts over the past year. But every now and then, a party comes along that's so epic, that we're forced to raise the bar on our standards – no pun intended. Alex Wang is known for throwing some of the best parties of Fashion Week, and we couldn't have been more thrilled to take over the bar at last night's celebration of his spring/summer '12 collection. Actually, epic doesn't even begin to describe it. With a frat party theme in place, all the great elements of our college party memories were there – glow sticks, endless amounts of alcohol (aka Kanon), Greek letters and pictures of naked girls adorning the walls, beer pong, and the inevitable end-of-the-night climax involving loud music (thanks to a performance by Odd Future) and spurts of champagne raining over the crowd more aggressively than Hurricane Irene.

  • Escape to New York Brings Out Some Man-Repelling Style

    Img_8260

If we've ever seen into the future at what a Man Repelling heaven might look like, Escape to New York may have been our closest encounter. Between packs of people dressed as Waldo (or the British version Wally), concert-goers donning various kinds of headgear–including, but not limited to Indian headdresses, bunny heads and floral garlands– or wearing not much at all, there was plenty of interesting sartorial choices to be digested. Who better to go to than our FOK ManRepeller for a little post-party commentary?

Here's what the Man Repeller herself, Leandra Medine, had to say of all the sartorial chaos:

As a Southampton native, I can properly attest that the notoriously stereotyped uptight chi chi town took a turn for the hippie down Montauk Highway this past weekend all due to the inaugural Escape to NY music festival. And even while the last day of what was supposed to be a three day ordeal found itself rained out, concert goers were given the chance to thoroughly enjoy the real festival experience, camping out--literally--on the grounds near the Shinnecock Reservation, and enjoying some sweet tunes a la Edward Sharpe, the Psychedelic Furs and Patti Smith. It should be no surprise then that wherever the party is, will be some serious style: mini peasant dresses, cropped tops, rad colored maxi dresses, head-dresses (oh yes, you heard that right–cowboys and Indians, anyone?), some interesting sunglasses, and even a tutu. Think Woodstock vibe, Coachella style and the token Stubbs and Wootton loafer, you know, just for good Hampton measure. And finally, as always, it's ain't a real party without Kanon brewing some of their signature drinks. Peep the selection of photos above to view my favorite manrepelling looks from the weekend. If you stop in your tracks salivating over the photographed bloody marys in the girl and guy combo picture, just know, I'm right there with you.

With Fourth of July just around the corner, we’re officially in vacation mode (sorry Friday afternoon work, it’s just not going to happen). We’re kindly reminded of what America stands for this weekend–life, liberty, and the pursuit of a fantastic cocktail. But we’re Swedish, so what do we know?

Since it’s the perfect opportunity to get away, we’re doing just that and heading out East. We’ll be sipping on cocktails in Montauk all weekend with some very important FOKs. (And FYI-you should come hang out with us at Shark Attack Soundz Saturday night!) One of our favorite parts about the ultimate summer holiday weekend is finding out what our FOKs are up to–because if it’s something fun, we’re totally inviting ourselves.

Take a peek at what some of our beloved Friends of Kanon have planned in celebration of the country’s independence. And make sure to enjoy the weather and cocktails. Happy Fourth!

There are some weeks where the days just drone on and on and on. And when they come about, the cure for that is more often than not a strong cocktail. Luckily, that hasn’t been the case this week (minus the strong cocktail part), as we’ve hit the town running between the Free Arts event in Chelsea earlier in the week to last night’s Lykke Li concert at Webster Hall. Not only did we get to hang out with our favorite Swedish singer as she belted out all our favorite hits, including “Sadness Is a Blessing” (did you know we’re in that music video? Because we are. And we won’t hesitate to tell you at every opportunity), but we also got to hang out with our favorite wingwoman, the Man Repeller herself, Leandra Medine. From her Swedish overload (no such thing in our eyes) to the fashion overload, we got MR's take on her Swedish night out on the town:

Last night marked the union of man repellers citywide at Lykke Li's Webster Hall performance in New York City, and despite the torrential downpour still plagued upon us (if I remember correctly, a couple months ago I braved the sky shower in the name of a performance by The Kills at the Soho Mondrian.)

  • Kanon FOKs On Their Ultimate Party Essentials

    Connie_bw

Not to toot our own horn or anything, but we think we've got this party thing pretty nailed by now. We've figured out just what makes one worthwhile, whether it's a playlist to die over, a guest list to envy, or key cocktails to lubricate the social setting. That's not to say though, that we're opposed to doing some research on how to make the next event even better.

And for this, who better to ask than our FOKs, who range from DJs to editors to social media and party experts. We asked a few key members of the Kanon family to fill us in on what they consider party essentials. Turn up their recommended music picks and let the good times roll, because now you're in the know too.

Connie Wang, Global editor for Refinery29

    Party games: a do or a don’t?

A huge don't. I find that extreme, drunken, competitive concentration always leads to hysteria on my part, and that's not a good look.

Best party theme you'd most like to attend or throw yourself?

Literary villians was a good one. The costumes ranged from Moby Dick to Lolita.

What would be in your ideal goody bag?

A vitamin water, a DVD of some cheesy sitcom, and an Extra-Strength Advil

We are quickly finding that no fashion party is quite as fun without Kanon cocktails to drink or a man repeller by your side to provide the night's witty commentary. But we prefer the original Man Repeller to the generic kind. Luckily we had her--Leandra Medine, in all her sartorial glory--at the Levi's Fall preview last night to enjoy those Kanon cocktails alongside us. And since we can't play back all her witty commentary from the night for you here, we had her blog about it instead. Read on for a Man Repeller's perspective on Fall fashion via Levi's, below:

Last night called for what was perhaps one of the more engaging and innovative Fall press previews the recent weeks have offered. Held in a large loft space on Wooster Street, the Levi's fall collection unveiled itself on giggle-inducing attractive models for the fashion crowd to admire. Here's the kick of it though, human installation art...clad in Levi's. A girl swaying around on a swing, two painfully good looking models, posed as a couple just laying in bed, another group lounging around by a television, a man wearing just jeans hung out in a bathtub off to a corner and another man in a very current rendition of the Canadian tuxedo stood in front of a bicycle, practically begging Scott Schuman to snap him. For the record, he most certainly deserved a click or two.

Even before getting lost in the preview though, upon arrival at the space, a desk dedicated to "The Bumbys," a man-woman duo masked in sunglasses and bandannas over their noses and mouths, sat with typewriters, observing the crowd walking in and typing the night away. I later learned they were writing judgments based completely off preview-goer appearances. They ranked us too and when it was time for my type-write of death, Ms. Bumby declared "your sweater looks cheap to make but like it probably cost a fortune." She was wrong. $23.99 at Necessary Clothing.

I digress. Ultimately, where there is copious fun and fashion, there will always be Kanon and it should be no surprise that our main squeeze provided the sweet libations. I had five, count them, cucumber juice x vodka cocktails, that took the preview from great to...fhdjktbsb. Know what I'm saying?

Give your FOMO a rest and peep some of the party photos above.

  • Do You Dare? Chrissie Miller Takes Sophomore to the Big Screen

    Press_011

Who better than one of our latest FOKs, The Man Repeller (or if we're going by birth names, Leandra Medine) to insert her commentary on Chrissie Miller's latest lookbook film, Truth or Dare. We screened the film out in LA with the whole Sophomore gang last night, but there's nothing like a New York girl's perspective to really catch all the most priceless moments. Read on to see what The Man Repeller had to say on truth or dare, suspenders, bull riding and more:

In Cass Bird's latest mini flick for Sophomore clothing's Chrissie Miller, some of my very favorite grown-up kids (cue: Chloe Sevigny, Jen Brill, Lesley Arfin) among others, kick it back old school and play a riveting round of Truth or Dare.

More riveting than the game, however, are the sweet suspenders drawn onto Jen Brill's t-shirt by Sophomore. Menswear as womenswear, without having to hurt your shoulders with proper suspenders. Sign me up. Distraction ensued for a mere twenty seconds until I forgot the suspenders and was thrust right back into the simple but engaging plotline. Dun dun dun.

Tattoos are drawn on, the prospect of bull riding presents itself and a girl-on-girl kiss falls into the equation too. Because my brain is programmed to catch any and all Man Repeller related behavior, I blame the kiss on long-time subscriptions to the clog wearing tribe. Maybe a lil' suspender loving too...catch my drift? You may think sexy, but I say button up, buttoned up. Watch, understand, discuss.

The long awaited opening of the Mondrian SoHo finally happened last night, and it's a good thing New Yorkers know how to stick it out even when brutal weather strikes. After fighting our way through a monsoon to get to the Crosby Street venue, we were more than ready to throw back a few cocktails– and last night we did just that along with our newest FOK, Leandra Medine, perhaps more commonly known as The Man Repeller (which also happens to be the name of her blog). Click over and you'll find plenty of witty commentary on all of the most man repellant yet fashionable items a woman could ever wear– including but not limited to massive shoulder pads, harem pants and the like. But stick around first to read her thoughts on last night's Kanon-filled fête. Here’s what she had to say:

Despite the torrential downpour plagued upon Manhattan last night, The Mondrian Soho’s opening celebration, held at full capacity and then some, proved that the party don’t stop for some silly rain drops.

Or for a live performance from The Kills, (and some drinks on Kanon,) at least.

The Mondrian set out a tent outside the entrance to keep party-goers dry while waiting to hear the door women holding virtual clipboards (cue: the iPad) decide the fate of their nights. More often than not people were turned away into the wet weather. But for the lucky slew that properly RSVPed, the party inside promised a slamming good time and a stylish peek at some of New York’s sweetest trend-setters.
