  • FOK Talk: Lesley Arfin Discusses the Upcoming HBO Series "Girls"

Since Sex and the City stopped airing, it seems that HBO hasn't quite found their equivalent...until now. And while the group of girls in the new drama called, well, Girls are quite different than the label loving, perpetually brunching ladies of SATC, we're sensing a relatability that will win over a similar demographic. Plus, the Judd Apatow produced show is guaranteed to produce plenty of laughs, albeit with a different type of humor than shoe-obsessed Carrie Bradshaw or uber dry Miranda Hobbes. In anticipation of the show, we hooked up with an old FOK of ours, Lesley Arfin, who also happens to be the Story Editor for Girls, to get the inside scoop on the upcoming series. Read on to get Lesley's take on HBO's new foursome, and don't forget to tune in on April 15th at 10:30 PM.

Kanon Vodka: We're super excited for the premiere of Girls--why will we love it?

Lesley Arfin: I think most people--girls and guys--will be able to relate to it. It's a very honest, relatable show.

KV: The show is based in NYC--your old stomping grounds. What are the top 3 places you miss most in Manhattan?

LA: You're making me homesick! I miss little things like bumping into people on the street, picking a friend up in a cab, sitting at a restaurant for hours and hours. I miss Mogador, Shake Shack, and my favorite pizza place on Metroplitan Ave. Weirdly I also miss Topshop even though I never really get anything there. Walking into Topshop is always a very promising feeling.

KV: Girls is about 20-somethings growing up and getting by in the city--how much of it is autobiographical?

LA: I don't think any of it is. Of course, there are some stories and situations that are "autobiographical," but the characters we've written are very different than who I was at that age. They're less concerned with being cool. It is a show of fiction ultimately and while I can identify with what the characters do and say, I don't think any of it is autobiographical--at least not for me. Lena Dunham, the show's creator, probably has more parallels but again, her characters, especially the one she plays, is VERY different than who she is in real life.

  • Kanon FOKs On Their Ultimate Party Essentials

    Connie_bw

Not to toot our own horn or anything, but we think we've got this party thing pretty nailed by now. We've figured out just what makes one worthwhile, whether it's a playlist to die over, a guest list to envy, or key cocktails to lubricate the social setting. That's not to say though, that we're opposed to doing some research on how to make the next event even better.

And for this, who better to ask than our FOKs, who range from DJs to editors to social media and party experts. We asked a few key members of the Kanon family to fill us in on what they consider party essentials. Turn up their recommended music picks and let the good times roll, because now you're in the know too.

Connie Wang, Global editor for Refinery29

    Party games: a do or a don’t?

A huge don't. I find that extreme, drunken, competitive concentration always leads to hysteria on my part, and that's not a good look.

Best party theme you'd most like to attend or throw yourself?

Literary villians was a good one. The costumes ranged from Moby Dick to Lolita.

What would be in your ideal goody bag?

A vitamin water, a DVD of some cheesy sitcom, and an Extra-Strength Advil

  • Do You Dare? Chrissie Miller Takes Sophomore to the Big Screen

    Press_011

Who better than one of our latest FOKs, The Man Repeller (or if we're going by birth names, Leandra Medine) to insert her commentary on Chrissie Miller's latest lookbook film, Truth or Dare. We screened the film out in LA with the whole Sophomore gang last night, but there's nothing like a New York girl's perspective to really catch all the most priceless moments. Read on to see what The Man Repeller had to say on truth or dare, suspenders, bull riding and more:

In Cass Bird's latest mini flick for Sophomore clothing's Chrissie Miller, some of my very favorite grown-up kids (cue: Chloe Sevigny, Jen Brill, Lesley Arfin) among others, kick it back old school and play a riveting round of Truth or Dare.

More riveting than the game, however, are the sweet suspenders drawn onto Jen Brill's t-shirt by Sophomore. Menswear as womenswear, without having to hurt your shoulders with proper suspenders. Sign me up. Distraction ensued for a mere twenty seconds until I forgot the suspenders and was thrust right back into the simple but engaging plotline. Dun dun dun.

Tattoos are drawn on, the prospect of bull riding presents itself and a girl-on-girl kiss falls into the equation too. Because my brain is programmed to catch any and all Man Repeller related behavior, I blame the kiss on long-time subscriptions to the clog wearing tribe. Maybe a lil' suspender loving too...catch my drift? You may think sexy, but I say button up, buttoned up. Watch, understand, discuss.

Click over to Truth or Dare to watch the full film for yourself.

  • Truth or Dare: A Film By Cass Bird For Chrissie Miller's Sophomore

It was perhaps the very same parties at which we first discovered the joys of vodka that we were also introduced to the age-old game of Truth or Dare. But while our consumption of vodka has remained consistent, we’ll be honest– it’s been quite some time since we had to choose between those two words.

We’re more than happy to be reminded of one of our favorite party games growing up, though, and our longtime FOK, designer Chrissie Miller, has provided us with the perfect way to do just that. She’s created a video lookbook for her latest Sophomore collection, along with filmmaker Cass Bird, that explores the game with some new players. Actress Chloe Sevigny, Jen Brill, and another Kanon FOK, Lesley Arfin, all take part in revealing their secret fears and lusts, and there’s even a girl-on-girl kiss thrown into the mix. But we can’t tell you who it’s between– you’ll just have to watch for yourself to find out.

As if Elizabeth Spiridakis’ post wasn’t enough of a Monday treat, now we get to see the night of the No.6 for 01 Magazine party through the eyes and lens of Café Con Lesley’s Lesley Arfin. From getting ready for the night to sipping delicious Kanon cocktails to introductions to pics of the totally cool crowd Lesley hangs with, these photos are worth way more than a thousand words. Here, Lesley’s take on the night:

This is me getting ready for the No.6/Kanon vodka party. I got this dress a few months ago but decided to debut it for this party. You can't really tell, but it's Fred Perry. I'm really into Fred Perry at the moment.

    Photo #2

I showed up and it wasn't insanely crowed yet, which was good. Can you tell what I immediately spotted from afar?

Last Friday night, we helped host a party at No.6 for 01 Magazine. Couldn't make it? Well, luckily we've got two of the hottest female bloggers in New York—and close, personal friends of ours—to tell you all about it. You may know Elizabeth Spiridakis from White Lightning and Café Con Lesley's Lesley Arfin. Both these ladies don't just know their way around a party but around pretty much everything else too, from music to fashion and everything in between. We're so glad they came and took the time out to share their thoughts on how it all went down. After all, could you think of anyone better to document a night out with? Here, Elizabeth’s take on the night:

Friday night I was psyched on hitting the Kanon/01 Magazine Party for a bunch of reasons, 3 very specifically: It was officially cape weather (my version of T-Shirt Time), I strongly support No.6 and their clog endeavors, and Lesley was meeting me there to hang. WINS cubed.

I got there before the space was packed which afforded me easy access to the alcohol (mint and lime are the way to my heart) and I actually got to peep the art; I have to say I was a big fan of this double printed color mountain mystic situation by someone named Sam Falls (real? Lucky duck); I hope he got 500 bones for it; if not how bout you call me.
