Our launch party in San Francisco was a party for the ages. We like to make a bold first impression, after all. You already know about the delicious food we served and have recipes for the killer cocktails of the evening--now we're bringing you some behind-the-scenes bartender insight from The Cocktail Lab

Read on to learn how they're shaking up the cocktail norms in the Bay Area (literally), and find out what these mixologists really think of Kanon. Happy weekend.

Kanon Vodka: What was the concept behind the cocktails for Kanon’s SF launch dinner?

Cocktail Lab: We revisited what we thought of as traditional vodka conceptions (limiting our mixing to fruit juices, trying to "hide" the vodka flavor) and tried to show off just how versatile the spirit can be. Whenever we concept cocktails for an event, we like to incorporate as much of an interactive element into the experience as possible, so the idea behind the reception punch was to start with a tasty but simple base, and let the guests choose from an array of bitters and other modifiers to customize their drink.

KV: What about the mixology scene in San Francisco makes it different from anywhere else?

CL: There's incredibly inspired and talented barfolk the world over, but there's definitely discernible differences in style, technique and choice of components when it comes to city vs city. I feel as if many (certainly not all) San Francisco bartenders reach for fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables first, and incorporate a lot of culinary components into beverage creation. What ties us all together is the incredible sense of camaraderie and support in the community at large.

  • Meet Stag Dining: the Movers and Shakers of the SF Dining Scene

    Cocktaillab

There are certain things we value in our friends--cocktail-making skills, good taste in music, the ability to be the life of the party, etc. But what we're really into are friends who are down with sustainability, just like we are. Good thing we paired with the crew behind Stag Dining Group for our San Francisco launch. Not only are they skilled event planners trying to bring back the fun in dining, they're also all about local, organic, and sustainable eats. Read on to see how they're staying green and shaking up the SF scene with their "clandestine dining" concept. Pretty sure we're gonna like our new home in SF.

Kanon Vodka: When working on a pairing menu with cocktails, what is the step by step process like?

Stag Dining: We look to create the food menu first because of the seasonality of the ingredients. From there we work with Cocktail Lab to develop pairings that complement or contrast from the flavor profiles of each course.

KV: What are some of the craziest pairings you guys have ever put together?

SD: The Bacon Powder Deconstructed Martini that was used for the Kanon event is my vote. It was paired with the smoked oyster and crab chowder. It was an epiphany type moment in which you can really experience how incredible a well paired course can be.

KV: You guys describe your events as "clandestine dinners"––what exactly does that mean?

SD: Our Clandestine Dinner Series has been our signature event series to date. These occur on a monthly basis, and we have developed themes for each of these dining events like the cocktail-paired Speakeasy Dinner, Summer Solstice Intervention Dinner and our Celebration of Soul dinner with Aloe Blacc. The clandestine aspect of the dinner is that each time they take place in a different location and diners don't know of the location until the morning of the event; it gives a sense of adventure to the dining experience. Additionally, this secretive nature is conducive to socializing with other diners, and we really try to emphasize the community and social aspect of food that so often gets lost at restaurants. At our dinners you are on a journey and you get to interact with a lot of great people though the course of the evening.

If you're crafty and love to entertain, throwing your empty Kanon Vodka bottles in the recycling bin isn't your only option. To celebrate the launch of Kanon in San Francisco, known to be one of the most eco-friendly cities in the country, we came up with a quick and simple DIY perfect for any dinner party. You'll need:
    - Krylon Spray Paint in "Metallic Silver"
    - Montana Spray Paint in "Light Blue"
    - Goo Gone or Goo Off
    - painters tape

We're used to throwing major FOMO-enducing events these days, but sometimes a smaller intimate dinner is just what the doctor ordered. Especially when it's in celebration of something that's got food and mixology so entrenched in its DNA. If we've lost you, we're talking about our official launch into San Francisco – a mecca of great food and most importantly, expertly crafted cocktails. To kick that notion off with a bang, we enlisted master mixologists Cocktail Lab and "clandestine dining" specialists, Stag Dining Group to treat our guests to a delicious pairing dinner. We even had our FOKs, Erica and Lauren of Honestly WTF in attendance to add a bit of DIY flair to the tablescapes. Click through the photos from the night here and check back on the blog for more content from Honestly WTF, Cocktail Lab and Stag Dining to come.

And most importantly, don't forget to order a Kanon cocktail next time you hit up a bar in the Bay Area. Bottoms up!

    The W Hotel San Francisco

We're kind of into world cocktail domination these days. So we've set our sights on the city by the bay – San Francisco. If you're anything like we are, the only addresses worth saving are those which lead to an alcohol-fueled good time. Bookmark this list of all the places in the San Francisco area that you can find us currently, and never have another boring night or bad cocktail. And don't worry, we'll be continuing to add to this list...well, forever. We can't let the SoCal FOKs have all the fun...

    See you soon!

To kick off our Northern California expansion, we teamed up with our friends at Refinery29 to celebrate the opening of Steven Alan's first ever San Francisco store in Hayes Valley. The cult favorite casual cool designer has stocked his newest outpost with the latest pieces from his eponymous collection, as well as his favorite items from other vintage-inspired brands imbued with Americana spirit like Whit, Common Projects, and Filson. The boutique's art and decor also draw from local sources such as the Alameda Fleamarket and various stores in the Mission. Among the guests were a flurry of local fashion folk, the likes of which included designer Alex Valdman, Blushing Ambition blogger Annabel Ly, and even the head honcho himself, Mr. Steven Alan. Luckily, the weather was only a tad chilly, so instead of jackets, we warmed up with a round of amazing Kanon cocktails. Check out the Polaroids above to relive the night with us.

  • Hey, San Francisco...We're Here!

We could get quite used to the California way of life. Laidback, sunny skies, beach trips at the drop of a hat, and a continuous commitment to organic lifestyles (sound familiar?). We're fitting in around SoCal, but we know there's a whole other side of the state to explore. Anthony Bourdain once said, "San Francisco is a two drink town- and by two drinks, I mean one in each hand"-- as if the Golden Gate Bridge weren't enough to grab our attention. We knew there had to be a good reason why Tony Bennett left his heart in the City By The Bay.
