  • Our 5 Fave Outdoor Drinking Spots

    Rhin

The last few days have given us a hint of something we haven't felt in a while- warm weather. Not sure what it is, but we're instantly put in a better mood knowing we don't have to battle the elements on our way to work or happy hour. The winter coats are already hanging, people. Time to trade in those mugs for frosty glasses of Kanon on ice.

With everyone savoring the Indio desert heat at Coachella, we only thought it appropriate to share our list of favorite outdoor spots in New York that make Spring drinking all the more enjoyable. We recommend checking these off your list as the temperature rises.

The Standard Biergarten, 48 Washington St at 13th St (212-645-4646)

We’re big fans of the Standard–from the Boom Boom Room to Le Bain and The Grill, there’s a spot for every occasion here whether it’s a liquid lunch or night on the town. Plus, it’s also one of the newest stockists of Kanon in the city. Added to the list as Spring settles in? The Biergarten, an open-air bar filled with communal tables for making friends, ping pong, and of course drinking. Whether you’re buying beer tickets or sneaking into the Grill for a Pennydrop (which we can’t recommend enough), stop by soon.

Gramercy Park Hotel, 2 Lexington Ave, (212) 920-3300

We’re an equal opportunity vodka, so where the party goes–we go too. While we love a good dive as much as the next guy, we can’t help but love the luxurious ambiance of the Gramercy Park Hotel’s terrace. Accessed via their private keyed-off elevator in the hotel, and with a laundry list of liquor-infused concoctions, it’s the kind of place that makes us feel like we have it all.

  • Taste Tested: 5 Best Bloody Marys in the City

    370

The "Red Snapper" at King Cole bar

We often daydream about how much better the weeks would be if they were capped off with a 3-day weekend. More time to sleep, relax and brunch without waking up Monday morning still feeling the effects of Sunday Funday (hello, aspirin). We’ve become sort of self-proclaimed, unofficial brunch experts, but you can't call yourself an expert in that area without getting to know THE good time brunch drink– the Bloody Mary. We’ve researched and scoured the city for the best Bloody Marys we could find. It wasn’t easy (again- the aspirin), but we can’t say it wasn’t fun. Who doesn’t love a drink that causes and cures a hangover at the same time? Here’s a look at our favorite spots to get our Bloody Mary on– it’s never too early to start planning the weekend, people.

    Prune, 54 East 1st Street, 212-677-6221

With a delicious food menu that includes your standard steak and eggs and not-so—standard sausages and oysters, there’s always a wait at Prune that’s worth it for your brunch fix. The best part? Prune has its own Bloody Mary menu with 10 different variations, whether you want to go classic, Caesar (made with gin, clam juice and a pickled egg), or Chicago Matchbox style (made with homemade lemon vodka and topped with pickled brussel sprouts, baby white turnips and green beans). You’ll also find super spicy options if you're feeling especially adventurous on a Sunday.

King Cole Bar at the St.Regis Hotel, 2 East 55th Street, 212-753-4500

If you’re looking for a truly authentic Bloody experience, try the King Cole Bar’s concoction (but beware, it also verges on the expensive side). The drink itself was said to have originated here in 1934 by bartender Fernand Petiot. It still remains the bar’s signature drink (under its original name, the "Red Snapper") and uses Petiot’s original recipe of tomato juice and vodka with black and cayenne peppers, lemon juice and Worcestershire. Take a sip and take in the hotel’s Old King Cole mural by painter Maxfield Parrish from 1906 while you're at it.

Church Lounge at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, 2 Avenue of Americas, (212) 519-6600

We're regulars at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, and it never disappoints. Between eyeing Kanon bottles behind the bar or visiting our FOKs Tommy Saleh and Steven Rojas, we always have fun when we stop by. But we especially love coming for the Grand Bloody Mary infused with Kanon. Mixing organic vodka with tomato juice only makes us feel better about indulging in our preferred brunch cocktail. We like to think we're doing ourselves a favor in more ways than one.

  • 5 Ways to be Green in the New Year

    Betteroption

Everyone you know has probably already promised to resolve to do ordinary, boring things like lose weight, call mom more, run a marathon, etc. etc. etc. Looking for something different? We recommend doing it the Kanon way and trying to make 2011 just a bit more green. Fun and informative and perhaps a little bit cheeky, these are just a few of our favorite ways to lower our negative impact on the environment.

    1. Carpooling. Or as we like to call it: Party Bus-ing. Or you know, you could just stuff as many people into a car as possible. Traveling with friends is way more fun than riding solo, anyways.

    2. Recyclable plastic cups: they're not just for beer pong anymore. We know, we know, we like to keep it classy from time to time with a martini glass too, but if you don't have enough glassware to go 'round, make sure you're serving with the recyclable stuff.

    3. Sleepovers. We've always found body heat to be extremely useful when trying to reduce your gas consumption.

    4. Buying local always helps to reduce your carbon footprint. And if your local liquor store doesn't carry Kanon, here's where you can change that.

    5. Wasting too much energy on the weekends? Try this for a change. Invite your crush over, turn off the lights and drink Kanon.

  • FOK Fiona Byrne: Diary of the NAAG Launch Party

Last night was the official launch of Naag.com, the site started by supermodel Agyness Deyn and her pal Fiona Byrne. A ton of boldface names showed up - Zachary Quinto, Seth Meyers of SNL, Christian Siriano, Karen Elson, Coco Rocha, Rebecca Minkoff, John Roberts... so many. The party was held at brand new Lower East Side restaurant Mary Queen Of Scots, a Scottish themed place in the former Allen & Delancy space. It was the first night the restaurant was operational! Guests grabbed a cocktail and mingled before dinner, sipping delicious concoctions created by MQS mixologist for Kanon Organic Vodka. Here Naag editor in chief Fiona Byrne takes you through the fun of last night.

Before dinner Aggy and I took a load off in the semi-tartan booths. Love a bit of plaid in our lives!

Everyone raved about The Younger Years or as everyone called it 'the cucumber one with bitters.' SO freakin' good. Doesn't this picture make you just want to drink every single one of these???

    Christian_siriano

Aw Christian Siriano! He is so sweet. He sent Aggy and I amazing dresses today to say congrats on the launch. Beats a bunch of flowers (although we'd take those too!)

Seth Meyers and his brother Josh. Both handsome actors. Their mum must be so proud!

Living in New York, there’s always something new brewing. From parties to restaurants to bands, this city’s got it all. When we heard about the Scottish-French spot, Mary Queen of Scots, our heads immediately filled with visions of tartan and tartare. In this new Lower East Side spot, brought to you by the team of The Highlands, rock n’roll and Scottish royalty will meet when it officially opens this week. When the girls from NAAG (we can always count on Agyness Deyn to know cool) wanted to have a launch party for their site, they were all about this spot.  And, of course, they were all about us. (We’ll be serving Kanon cocktails aplenty at said event.)

Below, bartender Marcine Franckowiak shares cocktail recipes from tonight’s event as well as some fresh details on the place you’ll be wanting to visit this fall.

When does the restaurant officially open?

We open on Thursday to the public but open tonight for the Naag event. It’s a lot of work, and it’s been hectic. In the end, things like this all come together though. Our employees are so family-oriented so everyone’s been pitching in and coming together to help. It’s been four and a half months now since we started.

Tell us about the space. We heard it described as "Kind of Highlands meets Vivienne Westwood and the Sex Pistols.”

We are definitely going for the roots of Scotland, with an excellent scotch selection and everything. We’ve been working with a lot of cool artists that are investors and one did a great painting for the place and even came in to tag up the place a bit. It’s got a hard-core edge. Even with our cocktails we’re going a bit boozy and a lot of staff are rockstar bartenders. The music will be all kinds of hard rock like Sex Pistols.

  • Halloween Party Cocktail Special Part Three: Caramel Apple

    Cocktail-2-29f2

    Caramel Apple.

It's finally here. Halloween weekend. And we wouldn't be a good friend or a good liquor brand without providing you with one last taste of Halloween with another cocktail recipe made especially for this weekend by our good friends over at Grand Life NYC. This one's brought to you by Kevin Felker, the Beverage Director of the SoHo and TriBeCa Grand Hotels and a renowned bartender here in Manhattan. He's worked at some of our favorite downtown haunts--Schiller's, Pastis and Bowery Bar just to name a few--and brings with him a passion for infusing bartending and culinary techniques into his cocktails. Knowing that his recipe is going to be delicious? Well, it's probably the only thing we're not afraid of this year.

    Caramel Apple

    2oz Kanon vodka

    1/2 oz fresh lemon juice

    3/4 oz Berentzen Apfel liqueur

3/4 oz caramel syrup * (see below)

    cinnamon sugar * (see below)

Put caramel syrup in a plate with a diameter larger than the martini glass. Lightly dip the rim of the glass in the simple syrup. Wipe the excess off the outside of the glass with a damp cloth. Hold upside down allow excess to drop off. Dip in the cinnamon sugar (for a crystalline effect allow to sit over night…it will look like rock candy). Add all other ingredients to a mixing glass. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into the cinnamon sugar rimmed martini glass. Garnish with apple slice and cinnamon stick.

    *Cinnamon sugar

-Add 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon to a 1/2 cup granulated sugar

    *Caramel syrup

-Place 2 cups sugar in a heavy bottom saucepan.  Add enough water to make look like wet sand. Heat of medium heat until the mixture turns a medium amber color. Remove from heat and add 2 cups room temperature water and stir until all the sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool completely to room temperature. Slice a green apple and soak the slices in the caramel syrup for at least one hour.

  • Halloween Party Cocktail Special Part Two: Sleepy Hollow

    Cocktail-3-06f2

    Sleepy Hollow.

Our friends at Grand Life NYC already showed you one deliciously spooky way to make your next Halloween cocktail extra special. But did you really think we'd leave you with just one recipe? Here's yet another Kanon-inspired Halloween drink that we're sure is a crowd pleaser. Just one more reason to get into Halloween spirits.

    Sleepy Hollow

    2oz Kanon vodka

    1oz white creme de cacao

    1/2 oz half and half

1/2 oz dark creme de cacao

pumpkin spice cocoa powder * (see below)

    simple syrup

Put simple syrup in a plate with a diameter larger than the martini glass.  Dip the rim of the glass in the simple syrup.  Wipe the excess off the outside of the glass with a damp cloth.  Allow the syrup to drip down in the glass.  Put the cocoa powder mixture in a deep dish and coat the rim of the glass with powder.  Add more powder to the center of the glass and rotate the glass so that all the syrup drippings get coated as well.  Dump out excess cocoa powder mixture.  Set glass aside.

Add vodka, half and half, and white creme de cacao to a mixing glass. add ice and shake.  Strain into the martini glass allowing the cocoa powder to draw in from the sides along the surface of the cocktail.  Slowly drizzle in the dark creme de cacao so there is a layer on the bottom of the glass.

    * Pumpkin spice cocoa powder

    - add 1 tsp dried pumpkin spice mix to 1/4 cup of cocoa powder

We'll take any excuse to throw a party but with CMJ in high gear here in New York last week, we didn’t need a single one. Case in point, starting at 3pm on Friday night right up until 3am in the morning, we helped throw a great night of drinks and music out in Brooklyn for Neon Gold Records. 12 hours, 19 bands, and 1 signature Kanon Cocktail—the Kanon Red, a combination Red Bull and Kanon—and to say that it was an awesome time would be the understatement of the year. Or at least until we throw our next party.
