    Chelsea Leyland

When we want to dance, British DJ Chelsea Leyland is the first person we think of. Not only does she have the best hair at any Kanon party, she's super cool and has the (super)power of being able to make everyone--yes, we mean everyone--dance. So since we're so into sharing, we thought we'd pass along a few of Chelsea's favorite things. And by things we mean cocktails and songs, obviously. Read on and find out what one of our favorite UK imports has been up to...

Kanon Vodka: You're known for having some great locks -- any color you're dying to try next?

Chelsea Leyland: I really want to try going black but im scared..

KV:  You play a lot of songs to get people in the party mood -- what's the one song that will get you on the dancefloor?

CL: Show Me Love - Robin S

    KV: Favorite Kanon cocktail?

    CL: Spicy Watermelon.

KV: The last night that made you say "I love New York?"

    CL: Robot Heart Halloween.

    KV: What's your signature drink?

CL: Kanon of course... well, or a beer.

KV: First record you ever purchased?

CL: I believe it was RUN DMC.

KV: What's the best party you've played so far this year?

CL: The BBC event I DJ'd. It was bananas--fire eaters, all the actors from "Sleep No More," it was insane!!

KV: Any artists we should put on our summer playlist?

    CL: SBTRKT

KV: Is there anyone you're dying to collaborate with?

CL: Musically ummm yes a million people, this a tough one. For now, lets just say I wouldn't mind working with Questlove from the Roots. I think he's a musical genius.

KV: What are the biggest differences between the nightlife in London and NYC?

CL: London is raw, NY is polished. This depends on the scene but in terms of the scene I work, I think that London has far more edge to it. People in NY are much safer in terms of their style, behaviour, and ear for music.

KV: Where do you like to hang out when you're in NYC?

CL: For cocktails, I like Hotel Delmano in Williamsburg and Maison Premiere for drinks and oysters. For dancing, I like to go to raves like Resolute, Robot Heart and Blk Market--the location changes, sometimes they're in basements of schools or on a boat. To take a tourist for a drink Boom Boom Room, you can't beat that view. I also like 141 Chrystie where I DJ--it's the new Red Egg. That's a good spot for dancing.

Kanon Vodka: Tell us about Le Alphabet Soup Hat.

Ricky Jackson: Just a hat that reminds you of alphabet soup lol.

KV: Why do you enjoy working with your brother?

RJ: Who says I do?? Ahaha nah it's fun because the ideas get intense.

KV: How did you get started making accessories?

    RJ: Don't discriminate.

  • FOK Talk: Jarno Kettunen Talks Art + Cocktails

    Jarno_k

    Jarno Kettunen

We're really into making new friends. Especially creative ones. See: Jarno Kettunen. Jarno is an Atlanta-based artist who specializes in "action drawings." As in, he draws his awesome illustrations as he sees things happen around him. File this under things we wish we could do. Jarno's done work for everyone from Chanel to Levis... and now Kanon!

He made a sick table covering for our Atlanta Launch Dinner and guests still haven't stopped talking about it. Read on, and find out where Jarno gets his inspiration. And incidentally, he also makes mention of an Argentinian cocktail that we're definitely trying out this weekend...

Kanon Vodka: Can you tell us a little about the piece you've made for our Atlanta launch dinner?

Jarno Kettunen: It is a large 64" x 4" mixed media piece -  it pictures my selection of the hottest spring 2012 fashion silhouettes with an edgy and organic but also glamorous feel. The silhouettes are tied together with Swedish symbolism and traditional elements including vodka which is the favorite drink of Sweden.

KV: Why do you think fashion + art go so well together?

JK: Artists have always been inspired by fashion and fashion designers by art. It is a continuous interaction, if not always a direct one. For me there is nothing more inspiring than to see the models with fresh new looks each season.

KV: Do you have a favorite medium?

JK: Currently I am using a lot of make-up in my work. I just love it. It is impossible to get the same effect by using traditional media. For this piece I am using make-up from Chanel.

KV: Where do you go in Atlanta to find inspiration?

JK: I do not really go out to search inspiration, but I do enjoy exploring the many local vintage stores and making all sorts of curious finds. I love to get inspired by old objects and the stories they tell.

KV: Do you have any Atlanta watering holes?

JK: Yes, there are a few nice ones. Conveniently there is a great cocktail bar practically downstairs from where I live.

KV: What would be in the Jarno Kettunen cocktail?

JK: My partner is from Argentina and the moment we met, I was introduced to Fernet Branca. The Argentinians drink it with Coke, but I like the Sputnik Cocktail. It is made of 1.5oz vodka, 0.5oz Fernet, a teaspoon of sugar, a splash of lemon and ice.  A perfect appetizer!

KV: Can you tell us about your live action drawings?

JK: These are drawings that I make directly at the backstage of fashion shows or as a performance. I call them action drawings because they are very spontaneous, expressive and usually done in just a few minutes. They are like snapshots from sporadic moments, moods and atmosphere.

KV: What's up next for you?

JK: I am working on a portrait for an editorial. Also making a collection of drawings as a personal project inspired by vintage styles for men.

  • Goodness Founder Elettra Wiedemann Talks Sustainable Eats and Dirty Martinis

    Elettra

This Fashion Week, we've tapped our inner foodies to partner with model, environmentalist, and now restauranteur Elettra Wiedemann for her pop-up lunch spot GOODNESS. What sold us on the concept (besides the lunchtime cocktail pairings) was her passion for sustainability through locally-sourced ingredients--a way of eating we can definitely get behind. Plus, she's brought on a top tier crew of chefs, including Mario Batali and Julian Medina, to create the menus for each day. We sat down with Wiedemann to find out more about her background in sustainable food, what we can expect at GOODNESS, and her favorite indulgence. Read on for the full interview, and come order a cocktail with us this week starting tomorrow from 11 AM-3 PM daily at 2 Columbus Avenue inside the Museum of Art and Design.

Kanon Vodka: How did you come up with the concept for GOODNESS?

Elettra Wiedemann: GOODNESS is a pop-up concept with a different chef and a different menu every day. I created GOODNESS because whenever I would travel around the world for the Fashion Weeks, I would never have the time or the energy to go try out the new places in town. GOODNESS brings all the best local culinary talent under one roof. Eventually, I would like to expand GOODNESS to not just Fashion Week pop-ups, but also pop-ups at film festivals, music festivals, art festivals, etc. It's the beginning of a long journey!

KV: Have you always been interested in the restaurant industry, and the sustainable/local aspect as well?

EW: I have always loved bringing people together around a dinner table and hosting. I also have always been interested in sustainabiity issues, which I taught myself about through the study of food and supply chains. My MSc dissertation from the LSE was an analysis of Vertical Farming and the future of feeding urban populations.

KV: What are you most looking forward to this Fashion Week?

EW: I am looking forward to launching our second GOODNESS! We have amazing chefs on board - Mario Batali, Leo Forneas, Alain Allegretti, and Julian Medina. Also I am excited about the daily changing Kanon cocktails - I will definitely be indulging in those!

  • Meet Stag Dining: the Movers and Shakers of the SF Dining Scene

    Cocktaillab

There are certain things we value in our friends--cocktail-making skills, good taste in music, the ability to be the life of the party, etc. But what we're really into are friends who are down with sustainability, just like we are. Good thing we paired with the crew behind Stag Dining Group for our San Francisco launch. Not only are they skilled event planners trying to bring back the fun in dining, they're also all about local, organic, and sustainable eats. Read on to see how they're staying green and shaking up the SF scene with their "clandestine dining" concept. Pretty sure we're gonna like our new home in SF.

Kanon Vodka: When working on a pairing menu with cocktails, what is the step by step process like?

Stag Dining: We look to create the food menu first because of the seasonality of the ingredients. From there we work with Cocktail Lab to develop pairings that complement or contrast from the flavor profiles of each course.

KV: What are some of the craziest pairings you guys have ever put together?

SD: The Bacon Powder Deconstructed Martini that was used for the Kanon event is my vote. It was paired with the smoked oyster and crab chowder. It was an epiphany type moment in which you can really experience how incredible a well paired course can be.

KV: You guys describe your events as "clandestine dinners"––what exactly does that mean?

SD: Our Clandestine Dinner Series has been our signature event series to date. These occur on a monthly basis, and we have developed themes for each of these dining events like the cocktail-paired Speakeasy Dinner, Summer Solstice Intervention Dinner and our Celebration of Soul dinner with Aloe Blacc. The clandestine aspect of the dinner is that each time they take place in a different location and diners don't know of the location until the morning of the event; it gives a sense of adventure to the dining experience. Additionally, this secretive nature is conducive to socializing with other diners, and we really try to emphasize the community and social aspect of food that so often gets lost at restaurants. At our dinners you are on a journey and you get to interact with a lot of great people though the course of the evening.

Especially when it's in celebration of something that's got food and mixology so entrenched in its DNA. If we've lost you, we're talking about our official launch into San Francisco – a mecca of great food and most importantly, expertly crafted cocktails. To kick that notion off with a bang, we enlisted master mixologists Cocktail Lab and "clandestine dining" specialists, Stag Dining Group to treat our guests to a delicious pairing dinner. • Swedish Band to Watch: Fibes, Oh Fibes!

It's almost the holidays and we're starting to miss our homeland: SWEDEN. So we've connected with the sickest band in the land, Swedish rockers Fibes, Oh Fibes! to bring you the song you'll be playing during all of your parties this year. Drinking and dancing. Two of our favorite things.

We hosted a party with the Fibes, Oh Fibes! guys to celebrate the release of the music video for their new (and totally infectious) single "Cerahtonia." They sing, "how can I be sober, when you're having fun?" Obviously, we have it on repeat. We're all about breaking boundaries when it comes to new ways to party, and this time was no different. Partygoers were given iPods and headphones, preloaded with "Cerahtonia," so they could dance and drink Kanon in their own zone--a silent disco if you will. Let's be real, parties aren't a place for conversation. Everyone loved it.

Check out the video above to see exactly what we mean when we say "silent disco," and follow the link below for an exclusive free download of "Cerahtonia." AND don't forget to check out the awesome interview we did here with the band's singer Christian Olsson. You're SO welcome.

KV: For someone who hasn’t heard Fibes, Oh Fibes! before, how would you describe your music?

CO: Someone said this a while back and it’s the perfect description in my opinion: Burt Bacharach on speed.

KV: You’ve worked with some other very well known Swedish artists/producers on this album. How did that happen?

CO: On the new album, ”Album,” we worked with Pontus Winnberg from Miike Snow as a producer and had John Eriksson from Peter, Bjorn and John playing the drums on the first single ”Cerahtonia.” Pontus actually produced half of our last album while working with Miike Snow. We’re all from the same town Lerum, outside of Gothenburg, so we’ve known each other for a while. And this time we decided to collaborate on the entire album.

There's really no place better than home during the holiday season, especially when home entails some fine Scandinavian-style partying. We kicked off winter with our friends and fellow Swedes at Happy Socks, who recently premiered a new series of portraits shot by FOK Terry Richardson at local gallery So Stockholm. Partygoers had the opportunity to shoot their own Richardson-inspired ad at the photo station, complete with props and, of course, an assemblage of top notch socks. And with the assistance of our signature Kanon shot machines (we didn't even bother with cocktails this time), even the most camera-shy of guests couldn't resist sneaking in front of the lens for their own model moment. • Chatting with Designer Elie Tahari

    Tumblr_lgu989p8nl1qaf0ja

    Elie Tahari (left), Bryanboy (right)

Life for us is all about the ride, and we sure as heck have met some interesting people along the way. One such recent encounter? Designer Elie Tahari, who with the help of blogger Erica Domesek of PS I Made This, showed us the true meaning of DIY (which we sometimes like to adapt to 'drink it yourself' – can you blame us?). Just as the designer launched his e-commerce this month, we sat down to chat with Mr. Tahari about his designs and recent travel plans – and we're keen to take advice on everything he has to say about that.

Kanon Vodka: Who do you personally see as the Elie Tahari woman?

Elie Tahari: The Elie Tahari woman embodies the perfect blend of sophistication, confidence and class. She is timelessly elegant and understated, and her style is an accurate reflection of that.

KV: You recently launched e-commerce on your own site. What is most exciting to you about the brand's new developments?

ET: There are so many things to be excited about within the launch of our e-commerce store, but perhaps the most exciting is the opportunity to reach new customers who might not otherwise have had the chance to shop at one of our boutiques. On our online store, visitors will be able to share their favorite items and purchases with their friends using our social tools, as well as quickly browse trends, sizes and colors. It’s the future of shopping.

  • 5 Questions With...Curtis Kulig

    Curtiskulig

We're betting that you probably spent your weekend indoors relaxing, going to the movies, or whatever else you prefer doing to avoid the rain. So after a weekend of rest, we're also betting that you're ready to let loose. We feel exactly the same way. Hopefully the weatherman is right about tonight's clear skies, because we're headed over to the Mondrian Hotel penthouse rooftop to sip on some Kanon cocktails with this week's guest host Curtis Kulig.

Unless you walk the city streets staring at your feet, then you've noticed that Curtis has splattered New York with a lot of love. His infamous “Love Me” tag can be spotted all over the streets of New York and has even made its way onto a plethora of T-shirts and prints. Before we share some love with him tonight though, we asked the urban artist a few questions about what he loves. Yes, a whole lot of lovin' is going down today. Don't forget to RSVP for tonight's rooftop party here.

Kanon Vodka: You’re known for the “Love Me” tag that’s all over New York. How did that all come about?

Curtis Kulig: I have OCD. I don't sleep very much. I guess it's just what happens late at night.

KV: What’s on your list of personal loves?

CK: My rooftop, Polaroid film, Jack Spade button-downs, white bed sheets.

After quite the rainy weekend in NYC, we've been looking forward to nothing more than heading down (or up, depending on where you're coming from) to the Mondrian Hotel in Soho for some after-work Kanon cocktails and an incredible sunset. The only issue is, the weather forecast just doesn't want to take our sides on this one. Regardless, we'll be crossing our fingers to fight cancellation up until happy hour, especially since we're super excited for this week's host, DJ Franco V. So help us out today by doing your own inner office sun dance, and get to know tonight's host a little better below. If the sun decides to show face, we hope you'll join us as our weekly rooftop party continues in stride. RSVP here.

    1. As a DJ, you’re in large part responsible for making sure people have a good time at your parties. Which songs always get people on the dance floor?

A lot of times, it really depends on the crowd you're playing for; different people get excited about different things. However, "Hello" by Martin Solveig and "Paper Planes" by M.I.A are pretty universal.

    2. What are your favorite new songs that came out this summer?

"Swagger Jagger" by Cher Lloyd has really great energy – I've played it pretty much every time I've DJ'd this summer. Also really into "Sorry for the Wait" from Lil Wayne's new mix tape of the same name – it's so good and I'm not a huge Lil Wayne fan.

  • Another Year of Wisdom (And Kanon) For Jenne Lombardo

    Jenne_lombardo

    Jenne Lombardo

It may be pretty evident, but we’re always down for a party. Whether it’s Fashion Week, set in the Indio desert, or celebrating Swedish holidays (ahem, Midsummer)- invite us to a party, and we'll most likely be down. Of all sorts of parties though, birthday parties may just be our favorites. How can we not appreciate when someone wants to celebrate their day of birth with some Kanon in hand? When we found out one of our favorite movers and shakers in NY, The Terminal Presents founder Jenne Lombardo, was celebrating her birthday this past weekend at Ruschmeyers, we were more than willing to help make her day special. But on one condition: that she answer a few of our curious questions.

Jenne sat down with us before blowing out her candles to impart a bit of birthday wisdom, share her ideal celebration soundtrack, and talk about how her style's evolved since moving to New York. Here’s to many more, Jenne. Happy birthday!

Kanon: What's the best and worst thing about getting older and wiser?
Jenne Lombardo: The best: wisdom, confidence, security, humility, compassion. The worst: Nothing. So far.

K: What do you do, in one sentence?
JL: I founded a strategic marketing company, The Terminal Presents. I work with brands to inject them into the worlds of fashion, music, art and popular culture. I am a corporation's secret weapon.

    K: Where’s your go-to summer destination?
JL: Montauk. I have everything I could ever want right here.

  • Kanon Catch-Up: Alan Cumming on Scents and Spirits

    Splash

Being the life and spirit of the party, we get to meet a wide array of folks at events each week. From makeup artists to designers to the random person who snuck into the party for free drinks, we’ve rubbed elbows and cocktail glasses with some pretty interesting characters. So when we got the opportunity to toast to actor Alan Cumming’s latest endeavor–a second perfume benefiting the Lesbian Human Rights Commission and Gay Men’s Health Crisis, we jumped at the chance. A good cause is a great reason for a cocktail if you ask us. Plus Alan’s IMDB roster includes many of our favorites films–why wouldn't we want to meet the man behind those quirky roles? But before we celebrate his new perfume tonight (with a party, of course), we got the opportunity to talk to Alan all about his new fragrance, toasting to marriage equality, and hating the word “typical.” Read on!

Kanon: Can you tell us how your partnership with I Hate Perfume started?

Alan Cumming: I first met Christopher when I went into the shop he used to have on 2nd Avenue and was amazed by the specificity of the smells he created. I became obsessed with one called “Riding Crop.” Then, quite a few years later, I saw him receiving lots of Fifi awards and he was dressed like a dandy, and I thought he was fascinating. Then we became friends and the idea of doing a fragrance came up –so we got into bed with each other (in a business sense, of course).

K: Back by popular demand, the 2nd Alan Cumming scent has the same ingredients as the first– but what makes it different this time?

AC: Well, firstly, all the money goes to charity. My half goes to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC), and Christopher's to the Gay Men's Health Crisis. And secondly, it's more raw and less packaged, which I like. Thirdly and best of all, it comes in an oil this time, and I love rubbing oily Cumming on myself.

Our idea of cocktail attire is "on the rocks" or "with a twist," so we usually turn to our fashionable FOKs when we need style advice. Over Coachella weekend, that FOK happened to be designer Phillip Lim, whose pool party featuring spiked Kanon snow cones was one of the weekend highlights. As you can see from the photos here, we picked up a tip or two from stylish party-goers like Alexa Chung and Garance Doré as well. But perhaps being surrounded by so many lovely faces this past weekend has made us a bit greedy, so we did what anyone would do–we hit Mr. Lim up for more about his Coachella experience. For the rest of the pictures from the party, click on over to our Facebook page.

Was this your first time making the trek to Indio? How did the weekend live up to expectations?
No expectations, every moment felt like the first moment. Fun at first sight.

If you know us well, you know that we love the weekend more than the next guy. So to say that this past one was better than most should be telling you something. One of the ultimate highlights of our entirely awesome weekend out at Coachella, however, was the over-the-top Saturday night fete thrown by Jeremy Scott. First of all, there was a wall made of teddy bears. Secondly, the party's residence was at none other than Elvis' former pad. You can find proof of this in a cameo by a pink bed in the photos above.

After spending an entire day sipping cocktails in the Indio sun at the Phillip Lim pool party, you'd have thought we’d call it an early night. Quite the opposite. We partied well into the evening with one of the best looking crowds we've ever seen (Hi Rosario Dawson! Hi Anouck Lepere!), sipped on Kanon cocktails, and turned The King's house into a giant dance party courtesy of fellow Swede Robyn, who manned the DJ deck. Don't take our word for all this, we have photographic proof here that the party was one of the most memorable of Coachella yet. Take a look for yourselves:

Perhaps even worse than saying goodbye to Coachella for another year was making the trek back from hot-as-hell Indio to New York weather…on a Monday. But while we've found ourselves in a bit of a depressed stupor today (no pools, no promises of Kanye West), a ray of light shone down on our day as the photos from our pool party with Phillip Lim landed in our inbox.

It already seems so long ago, but just this Saturday we celebrated the New York fashion scene's weekend on the West Coast with Phillip Lim at a pretty epic house in the desert overlooking all of Palm Springs. There were spiked Kanon snow cones for the drinking– er, crunching– amazing Mexican food for the eating and some summer-inspired tunes for the listening (yes, that would include the Beach Boys) played by DJs Binki Shapiro, Alexa Chung and Myles Hendrik.

Also in attendance sipping Kanon and sun bathing alongside us? A few of our favorite FOKs Rumi Neely, Bronques and Harley Viera Newton, fellow Swede Elin Kling, street style extraordinaire Garance Doré and the man of the hour, of course– Phillip Lim (who somehow elusively dodged our lens). You'd never know it was 100 degrees plus with the amount of good vibes everyone was soaking up. Luckily, Laura Taylor, our go-to girl for Coachella snaps was on deck with a Polaroid camera in hand.

We’ve admittedly spent an uncharacteristic amount of time this weekend resting after a whirlwind of a week jam-packed with fashion parties and shows to attend. The marathon that is New York Fashion Week is finally over folks, but despite all of the exhaustion that comes with it, we have to say, we already miss it just a little.

Perhaps our favorite part about last week was getting to know new FOK, Rumi Neely – the gorgeous face behind personal style blog fashiontoast. And when you get her and the ever-charming Bryanboy together with some Kanon, you’re looking at a guaranteed good time. In case you missed it, here’s a little photo recap of the last night we all spent together during NYFW. Here’s to hoping we’re all reunited soon.

Sunday night at the Bloglovin' Awards, I went in with zero expectations since I never win anything and just thought it would be fun to see some familiar faces and meet some bloggers I somehow hadn't managed to yet. I arrived with Colin promptly after the Thakoon show close by at the Plaza hotel and started milling around aimlessly, chatting with my friends from Revolve, Geri from Because I'm Addicted, the always adorable Roberts brothers, Phil Oh from Streetpeeper, etc...then jumped around madly when my fashion week cohorts Andrew Bevan from Teen Vogue and Bryanboy arrived. We took our seats and waited nervously for the winners to be announced...I was so surprised to win both for personal style and blogger of the year! I have the most amazing readers I could possibly hope for; thank you to every single person (apparently over 250,000 people??) who voted and to Mattias [Swenson] for organizing everything so brilliantly! Love you all. -Rumi

  • OH MY GOD. We're Livestreaming Bryanboy for Fashion Week!

For those who hung out with us during last Fashion Week, you probably saw Bryanboy on our blog in all of his head-to-toe leopard glory working his hypothetical catwalk, hair flip and all. Well, ladies and gents...he's back. In real time. On February 16, starting at 9 AM, watch Bryanboy as he becomes the first blogger to be livestreamed for the web right here on Kanonvodka.com. That deserves a pretty big, OMG, right? Might have to get a cocktail ready for this one, people. Who knows what he'll do.

Last night’s dinner at Junoon was delicious, to say the least. And the food was only enhanced by the tasty cocktail pairings and the FOKs we got to hang with.

Amongst the highlights on the menu were a Piri-Piri shrimp garnished with avocado and jicama, a Halibut dish covered in a classic spiced Indian sauce, lamb shank, and a date pudding cake to satisfy our sweet tooth. Did we just list the entire menu? OK, so basically everything was a highlight – including the moment when several staff bartenders armed themselves with cocktail shakers and did a dance with them that lasted for at least a minute (see Twitpic in slideshow for full visual).

But our favorite part of any dinner is always testing, or more like sipping every last drop of the cocktails, especially when they’re infused with Kanon and have names like “Caraway Cooler” and “Albie’s Alibi” (which was perhaps not coincidentally named after our very own marketing man, Albie Hueston). Among the other taste testers were Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This, Paper Magazine’s Whitney Spaner, Sarah Kunst of Styleite, V mag’s Natalie Hazzout, Monocle’s Aisha Speirs, Ani Foirentova of Trend Land and some friends at Fast Company and Gothamist too.

To recap the night with us, click through the Twitpics in the slideshow above. But before you go, here’s one last parting note to ponder from the night, spoken by our FOK and dinner guest, Jenna Elizabeth: “Who knew Swedish and Indian mix so well?!” Well, now we do.

We’ve known for a while just how influential our blogger friends (and our FOKs) are when it comes to the web and beyond, from being front row and center at fashion shows next to big-name editors to consulting at fashion houses worldwide. We don’t think we’re alone when we say that these hard working bloggers put the “it” in commitment. And we’re always toasting to their success – with a Kanon cocktail in hand, of course.

Being a brand that celebrates its friends and heritage, there’s nothing we enjoy more than hearing about the success of our fellow Swedes. So we were seriously stoked when we heard that one of our favorite reads, Swedish style blogger extraordinaire, Elin Kling, has designed a collection for Swedish brand H&M.

As Elin describes it on her blog, it's a “modern, light and minimalistic collection with bohemian influences,” in which you’ll find flowy and draped silks, maxi dresses with abstract prints and simple white pieces in the form of structured blazers and high-waisted trousers. And with 10 percent of proceeds going to UNICEF, this is definitely one collab we’re standing behind.

According to The Cut, Elin is the first blogger to collaborate on a line with the company, and while it will only be made available to the H&M Swedish market (starting February 3), that won't stop us from toasting Elin on a job well done. Cheers!

  • Getting Green: Sustainable Party

We love to throw a good party, but that's not the only thing we're about. Being an organic vodka, we're always on the hunt for ways to live an eco-friendly lifestyle, too – and folks who share our mission of being green quickly turn into FOKs (Friends of Kanon). Sharing our love for a great party? Well, that's always an added bonus.

Enter Sustainable Party, a company that specializes in "ideas, products and best practices for creating environmentally and socially responsible events." Our new FOKs Jessica Holsey and Emily Doubilet, the all-around awesome gals at the helm of the company, sat down to talk with us about everything from green party tips to possible world domination to merging their "eco-social ethics with the art of the party." We’re definitely on board with anyone who’s helping us change and shape the world with a great cocktail in hand.

Kanon: Tell us about Sustainable Party.

Emily: Sustainable Party is an online one-stop-resource for making any event or social gathering more sustainable! Our mission is to encourage people to embrace sustainability (environmental, social and practical good) in all aspects of the party that is life by providing people with products and information to green their events while having fun. We launched in December 2008.

How have people reacted to the idea behind Sustainable Party?

E: There are mostly positive reactions, but there will always be some negative reactions! For example, some environmentalists might say that the most eco-friendly event is to stay at home and NOT party, or one that never uses anything disposable. But our idea of sustainability means that we want people having fun as well, so if reusable products aren't an option, our biodegradable tableware products can become part of a natural cycle of bio-materials.

But we mostly get positive reactions – for example, the mother of a small boy wrote that her son was so excited by Sustainable Party that he bragged to all his friends at school about not creating any waste and even had people donate to a charity instead of giving him gifts – at such a young age!

  • FOK Joshua Katcher: A Day In The Life

We always wish we could spend the day in the shoes of people we love here at Kanon. Luckily for us, Friends of Kanon are always inviting us into their lives whether that be through events or inviting us over for dinner. After all, the best way to our hearts is through our stomachs and cocktail glasses, and being all heart, we're always on the lookout for new friends who can help us with that.

When we heard that Joshua Katcher of The Discerning Brute, a website that chronicles "fashion, food and etiquette for the ethically handsome man," also runs a vegan dinner series called Gracious Gourmand, we knew we would become fast friends with him too. This newest FOK gives us a look at a regular day in his life from a bounty of delicious vegan meals to working on his website and styling jobs for an anti-fur project topped off with a sparkling Kanon cocktail we're craving. Here's Joshua's day:

    Joshuawest

I am a conscientious hedonist. That is, I'm a person that seeks out pleasure and prioritizes aesthetics ethically. Some might argue that placing any limitations on the pursuit of pleasure, joy or fulfillment is a compromise, but what I've found is that when you indulge in anything - from a perfect cappuccino to a cozy and handsome coat, the pleasure is heightened in the knowledge that those things were created in an ethical manner, where more than just self or convenience is considered. This is also what I love about Kanon - it's a delicious vodka, and it's organic, made in a wind-powered facility, and has been that way since the 16th century.

    Morning

9am: I am finalizing the menu for the evening's Gracious Gourmand supper-club. Enzo, the rescued Chihuahua, likes to get in on the action. My lap is his preferred location. We'll soon go for our morning walk and deliver the menus to the cafe. I am sporting some great thrift store finds, like the acrylic knit sweater and the cotton moleskin peacoat. A lot of what I do on TheDiscerningBrute.com is offer ethical fashion advice to men. Thrifting is one of the easiest and fun ways to shop ethically. When no new resources have to be extracted, that is ideal. The glasses you see are vintage frames from Fabulous Fanny's, a rad vintage glasses store in the East Village.

Being organic is one of our prides and joy. We are big fans of anyone who keeps up with a similar lifestyle like we do. Whether it’s a designer producing locally or restaurants who are producing great food in environmentally friendly ways. One of our favorite destinations is GustOrganics. Not only is it the first and only certified organic restaurant in New York, but it's also the first certified restaurant in the world using 100% organic ingredients. We chatted with the founder Alberto Gonzalez--who moved to NY from Argentina just to open the Greenwich Village spot--about his quest to get more people eating organic, even if he has to launch a fleet of organic food trucks to do so.

Where did the idea for the restaurant come about?

I was coming to New York and it was hard to find good quality food at a price I could afford. I thought it was an opportunity to set things right by getting top quality food at affordable prices. I researched food systems in New York and America and the more I discovered, the more I wanted to start this.  Something like 98% of food in America comes from factories and only .5 percent is organic. I wanted to do something about it.

Tell us about the restaurant motto,“Changing the world one meal at a time."

Most of the food in America is full of synthetic hormones, antibiotics, and chemicals. It’s just not good for people. Every single time we serve a meal at GustOrganics, we know they’re not eating that here. We’re not only the first certified organic in the world, but we’re the only ones serving 100% organic ingredients anywhere. The restaurant has a lot of renewable components too. We recycle, we compost, we don’t serve plastic bottle drinks and our bar is completely organic too. All the tables and floors, it’s all made from recovered wood and we don’t use paints with chemicals. It’s a long list of things we do to try not to impact the environment. GustOrganics is also one of the most green restaurants. We feed 7,000 people each month and they’re supporting us while so many places are closing their doors. We just recently launched a street truck in Manhattan as well. It’s on 53rd and Park Ave and we serve all organic food with renewable sources and even have a solar panel on top of the cart. We’re serving food for under ten dollars for New Yorkers at lunch. Our customers are very supportive in helping us grow and bring more organic food to the mainstream.

We threw a rager of a party at The Jane Hotel with Matt Kliegman and Carlos Quirarte, the always-on-the-scene boys from The Smile NYC. A whole slew of people turned out in their All Hallows Eve best. • FOK Claire Thomas: A Day In The Life

If there's one thing we hold dear it's being able to hold our own in a conversation surrounding food and, more importantly, drink. How do we do it? With the help of a lot of research that involves on-site investigations—cocktails don't just drink themselves!—and the many friends of ours who document this stuff for a living to help point us in the right direction. One of our favorites? Claire Thomas, whose LA-based Kitchy Kitchen blog keeps us up to date on some amazing food happenings out west and some even better DIY cocktail recipes. We asked our newest Friend of Kanon to give us a look at what a typical day is like for a girl whose life is quite literally consumed with food, and here are the mouth-watering results. Spoiler Alert! She even created her very own Kanon cocktail recipe. And it's delicious.

    1

8:30 am: Every Wednesday morning you can find me tasting my way through the farmer's market in santa monica. This is my happy place where I go to check out what's in season and have my pre-breakfast oysters. Yeah, I get strange looks for this morning ritual but that cold ocean taste and shot of B-12 wakes me up better than the strongest cup of coffee.

    2

9:30 am: Next I pop by Huckleberry with my dear friend Laurel, a character straight out of Anne of Green Gables (seriously! look at the ribbon in her hair). She is a come to life Gibson girl and usually has a bun haphazardly piled on her head we've named the "cinnamon bun." Speaking of baked goods, Huckleberry has the best breakfast in town, without a doubt.  Their apple turnover is so good it's a little depressing. I always buy a second one to bring home for my brother, and then sort of black out and wake up covered in flakes before we pull in the driveway.  I think I have a problem.

We spent quite a lot of time in the Hamptons sitting poolside and listening to some pretty great bands this summer. Living like it’s still summer isn’t easy, but lucky for us there’s the New York outpost of the Hampton’s restaurant Almond to help keep us in that frame of mind. Because, if there’s anything we like more than a perfect Kanon cocktail on a crisp fall night, it’s finding deliciously classic comfort food in the middle of New York City.

Born in Bridgehampton in 2001 and New York in 2008, Almond has been serving up locally-sourced farm-to-table cuisine from owners Jason Weiner and Eric Lemonides (Brooklynites that have been friends since the age of six). We caught up with Jason, who is also the chef at Almond, to tell us a bit about the warm atmosphere and unfussy rustic farm-first menu he’s created from Montauk to the Flat Iron.

The first Almond restaurant is based in the Hamptons, how did the decision to open a NY spot happen?

It kind of dropped in our laps. Jeffrey Chodorow had done a lot of different things in the spot and nothing had stuck. He was a friend of ours and of the restaurant, he came to us and basically gave us the keys to the car.

How has the New York restaurant differed from one out east?

The clientele and expectations are different out east. People are on vacation and aren’t really interested in being challenged culinarily. However, it jives well with what we do, which is giving people an honest product without pretense.

In the city, there is a little more interest in getting esoteric in cuisine. Both spots are very similar; it’s an honest product served in a straight-forward way. We let the ingredients speak for themselves without a lot of bells and whistles and source out great ingredients.

Tell me about the menu being “farm-to-table”. Why do you use this?

I am most concerned with the product being local. The whole ethos with ‘farm-to-table’ style to me is not a do it as a do-gooder thing, it’s about self-preservation. I am just interested in getting the best ingredients and usually the best ingredients are the ones you get without a middleman, you get from a friend. It’s a bit more expensive but it’s about making your customer happy. If I could take a 5 x 6 tomato that’s been shipped all around the country without a lot of flavor, color or taste- and if it tasted great overnight, I’d use it but the fact is that product doesn’t taste as good. If I want my customers to enjoy their meal and come back, I want to have the best product possible. It just happens, that product is around where you are. It helps that I’ve made relationships with some amazing producers of meat and vegetables. They’re my friends so I know it’s great and from a chef’s perspective I don’t have to do much to it. I can just add a little olive oil and sea salt. It makes my life easier to work with a great product and it also makes my customers happy so I stay in business.

When it comes to signature cocktails that aren't either neon-colored or come with a crazy straw--seriously, what is with some restaurants today?--people everywhere are looking to the cocktail menus of years long gone by. In New York City, if you're looking for one of the best ways to relive some history at the bar then look no further than the gang over at Cuff & Buttons, one of the city's leading cocktail catering companies. We asked them some questions and even got the scoop on some of their favorite cocktail recipes. Bottoms up!

    What is Cuff & Buttons?

Christy Pope: We are a cocktail service and beverage consulting service that does events throughout the United States. Chad (Solomon) and I have an extensive consulting background for the spirit and beverage industry in everything from hotel chains to individual restaurants to bar concepts. From small apartment parties to fashion week extravaganzas to Broadway premieres, we’ve been running the gambit in the spirit world. We’ve kind of helped drive the concept of beverage catering and have been in existence since 2006.

How did the concept for Cuff & Buttons come about?

Christy: Starting in 2001, working behind the bar at Milk & Honey. What we noticed was that the clientele was more and more into cocktails. People would come us to say, “We’re having a party this weekend, can we have a bartender come to our event?” There’s a thousand different reasons people need bartenders at their event, especially more cocktail-oriented craft drinks. We just answered the market’s need essentially.

Chad Solomon: We both got involved in the industry after 9/11, essentially by working at the craft cocktail bar Milk & Honey. We were hooked by the historical angle and the elevated trade-craft involved in craft cocktail bartending, which was a very different approach from the norm at that time.

What drink order or request makes you immediately angry?

Christy: I don’t know if there’s a drink that makes you necessarily angry but it can be frustrating when you’re three deep at the bar and someone walks up and orders a Ramos gin fizz. It’s just frustrating because one will go out and it’s so tasty, it’s a viral cocktail. Everyone sees it and wants one. It makes for a hairy night…

Chad: It’s a drink we love obviously but there’s an appropriate time and place. It’s a bad move to walk up to a bar that’s buried on a Saturday night and order a Ramos gin fizz. It’s not the time to do it.
