  • In From Sweden: Behind the Scenes at the Elle Awards in Stockholm

At Kanon we're lucky enough to hang out with some pretty creative visionaries. From DJs to designers, Swedes to Americans, we've got a crew that's insanely good at doing things their own way. When we hosted the Elle Awards in Sweden earlier this month, we thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase the creative processes of two international innovators (with two very different roles), and the work that goes into an awards show this massive. We followed internationally acclaimed Swedish stylist, Robert Rydberg, and Queens-born bartender Robert Radovic who now manages the bar at Stockholm's Nobis Hotel, as they prepped for the event.

To give you a behind the scenes look like you've never seen before, we enlisted the help of some up-and-comers from Hyper Island, an international hub for creative professionals, as well as Another Agency, who gave us their take on each Robert. Check out the film to watch these creative minds at work--and try to see if you can spot Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, ABBA rocker Agneta Fältskog, and Swedish pop star Agnes in the mix.

Since we're so into awards these days, we decided to attend The Elle Awards at the Grand Hotel Stockholm--a massive fashion awards show in Sweden. And since acknowledgements were given to the best designers, photographers and stylists who have contributed to the fashion industry, both in Sweden and internationally, we knew we had to go all out with the cocktails. There's something about being in our homeland that gets us really inspired. Not only are these cocktails delicious, and believe us, we "sampled" enough to know that they are, they also look pretty amazing. So whip out your recipe binders and file these in the "most delicious" category. Your next party will be exponentially more successful (read: tipsy) with them on hand.

Starting the new year with a kick-ass party is pretty much the only way we do it around here, and just last week, we provided the libations (and let's be honest, the fun) for The Elle Awards in Sweden. As the first international awards hosted by the magazine, it brought out 800 of the biggest fashion names in Sweden as well as international guests – including supermodel Caroline Winberg and singer Elin Lanto just to a name a couple.

If you've ever been to the Grand Hotel Stockholm, you know the venue is breathtaking with glitzy chandeliers and gilded walls surrounding you at every turn, which is why we had to ensure the caliber of cocktails were unmatched for the night's event. Thus, guests were treated to four different drinks crafted exclusively for the Elle soiree – and we must say, they turned out pretty darn delicious. Think strawberries, basil and vodka in a jar – but that's just a small taste (for full recipes click here). Check out all the winners from the night below and browse through our favorite pictures from the event in the slide show.

We'll be the first to admit that we're no tour guides, but if there is one area we know like the back of our hands, it's our homeland Sweden – no question. And for those of you lucky enough to have a Swedish holiday on your calendar this month, well, you just got luckier, because below you'll find a list of our favorite places in the area to visit with family and friends, as well as a few key bar suggestions (honestly, would we leave that out?). For those of you not planning a Swedish holiday in your near future, well, we suggest you start soon.

    What: Old Town Christmas Market
Why: Some houses in Old Town Stockholm date back to the mid 1400s, and it's a perfect place to spend an afternoon strolling around looking into art galleries and coffee shops. Every year they arrange a Christmas market where you can buy your gifts, drink Glögg (Swedish hot spiced wine) and stroll to your heart's content.
Kanon Tip: Every day at 12:15 PM weekdays or 1:15 PM on weekends, the royal guards change shifts. Make sure to walk up to the castle at the right time to catch this military spectacle.

  • Swedish Band to Watch: Fibes, Oh Fibes!

It's almost the holidays and we're starting to miss our homeland: SWEDEN. So we've connected with the sickest band in the land, Swedish rockers Fibes, Oh Fibes! to bring you the song you'll be playing during all of your parties this year. Drinking and dancing. Two of our favorite things.

We hosted a party with the Fibes, Oh Fibes! guys to celebrate the release of the music video for their new (and totally infectious) single "Cerahtonia." They sing, "how can I be sober, when you're having fun?" Obviously, we have it on repeat. We're all about breaking boundaries when it comes to new ways to party, and this time was no different. Partygoers were given iPods and headphones, preloaded with "Cerahtonia," so they could dance and drink Kanon in their own zone--a silent disco if you will. Let's be real, parties aren't a place for conversation. Everyone loved it.

Check out the video above to see exactly what we mean when we say "silent disco," and follow the link below for an exclusive free download of "Cerahtonia." AND don't forget to check out the awesome interview we did here with the band's singer Christian Olsson. You're SO welcome.

KV: For someone who hasn’t heard Fibes, Oh Fibes! before, how would you describe your music?

CO: Someone said this a while back and it’s the perfect description in my opinion: Burt Bacharach on speed.

KV: You’ve worked with some other very well known Swedish artists/producers on this album. How did that happen?

CO: On the new album, ”Album,” we worked with Pontus Winnberg from Miike Snow as a producer and had John Eriksson from Peter, Bjorn and John playing the drums on the first single ”Cerahtonia.” Pontus actually produced half of our last album while working with Miike Snow. We’re all from the same town Lerum, outside of Gothenburg, so we’ve known each other for a while. And this time we decided to collaborate on the entire album.

There's really no place better than home during the holiday season, especially when home entails some fine Scandinavian-style partying. We kicked off winter with our friends and fellow Swedes at Happy Socks, who recently premiered a new series of portraits shot by FOK Terry Richardson at local gallery So Stockholm. Partygoers had the opportunity to shoot their own Richardson-inspired ad at the photo station, complete with props and, of course, an assemblage of top notch socks. And with the assistance of our signature Kanon shot machines (we didn't even bother with cocktails this time), even the most camera-shy of guests couldn't resist sneaking in front of the lens for their own model moment. Check out a few of the images here as well as general party photos shot by FOK Frederik Etoall.

We're not okay with throwing a party that's just okay. Average just isn't a word that's in our vocab. Which is why we decided to go a little wild when it came to choosing a location for our latest Swedish adventure--the launch of Cheap Monday's new underwear line.

We hosted the party in Statens Bakteriologiska Laboratorium (aka the Government's Bacterilogical Laboratory), a former research facility just outside of Stockholm that was shut down in 1993 and has been empty ever since--mildly terrifying, incredibly cool. We took the creepy factor and ran with it, by turning the old cooling room for lab samples into our serving station, where Kanon shots were doled from our crazy-looking 1937 shot machines. To take it even further, the party's centerpiece was none other than a sick art installation by Antwerp artist Frederik Heyman, complete with lasers and smoke machines. Oh, and did we mention that all of the Kanon cocktails were glow-in-the-dark? Yeah, it was a party for the ages. Check it out for yourself.

By morning, everyone usually has a different take on the previous night’s activities. That’s why we always like to see how our FOKs took in the scene- especially on nights that get particularly wild. Case in point, the Marc by Marc Jacobs Halloween party. In summary: beautiful people dressed like animals, three types of Kanon cocktails (including our Cucumber Lemonade), and a major dance party in an empty Mongolian Barbeque restaurant. Basically a recipe for awesome if you ask us. We had FOK and gorgeous blogger, Signe Siemsen, hit the scene and report back on her night. If these photos don’t make you wish you were there, hearing about her experience certainly will.

Here's what Signe Siemsen had to say:

Marc by Marc Jacobs threw a party with an easy to love theme: Animal. They invited Stockholm's fashion and media crew to a Mongolian restaurant loaded with great sound, lights, and of course my liquor of choice, Kanon Vodka.

There are few yearly events we love more than Halloweekend, as evidenced by the fun we had with LoveCat Magazine, at LACMA's Tim Burton-inspired party, and with Chelsea Handler at the Standard's Sinners and Saints soiree all last week. And we couldn't think of any better way to lift our spirits – that is, until we were informed that in Sweden, Halloween comes as a week-long holiday package. Yes...a week! Our list of reasons why we love being Swedish just got longer, friends.

So if you think this post is no longer timely or relevant, well, you would be wrong. We spent last Thursday in costume yet again for the Marc by Marc Jacobs Halloween party at the Djingis Khan Mongolian Barbeque restaurant. Along with Marc by Marc, we teamed up with Freshnet and IBEYOSTUDIO to throw an animal-themed rager that got a little wild, to say the least. To really get in theme, we cleared out all the furniture and transformed the Barbeque spot into an animal house for a night – you know, since we're keen on making as much room for people to enjoy themselves as possible. This included moving a 1,000 pound serving station that took eight of the strongest guys we could find to lift. Yes, eight. Guests unleashed their own Halloween spirit by picking up masks at the Marc by Marc Jacobs store before the night got underway, while others created their own wildlife-inspired costumes. As far as the cocktails? We had three on hand for the tasting, including our famous Cucumber Lemonade. Here's a look at the night in photos. We're thinking it's about time the U.S. embraced Halloweek too.

    1. We're Clever: Kanon isn't just a name we dreamt up one day. A long, long time ago we created vodka for the workers in the Akers Styckebruk cannon factory--thus "Kanon" was only fitting. Obviously we've got serious street cred in Sweden having inspired the cannon makers needed by the Swedish army. So tough.

So far we’ve found a home in Los Angeles and New York, but really, our first home will always be Sweden. What can we say? Beautiful people, our distillery, and great times can be found here – so naturally we like to visit often. Last week we attended the opening of the BLK DNM store, the latest and highly-anticipated line from Johan Lindeberg. We had to check out his new Stockholm digs, especially since we love his New York location so much. With a packed store and a selection of Kanon cocktails to choose from, we had the fashionable crowd imbibing in good times and great buys. Better yet? After this party, there was an AFTER-PARTY at Miss Voon, a new restaurant located at Sturegatan 22. See, when you hang with us, the good times just don’t stop. Here’s a look at the night in photos and a recipe for one of the delicious cocktails we served. Enjoy!

    1

    Gripsholm Distillery

At Kanon we pride ourselves on creating an impeccably smooth and tasty vodka, not only because of the organic ingredients that go into it, but also because of our signature single distillation process. Perhaps this phrase brings back awful memories of high school chemistry (you know – bunsen burner mishaps, raccoon-like goggle marks and the like), but rest assured, dear friends, our single distillation is actually a very beautiful thing. Since we believe that to truly appreciate something to the highest potential, you need to know where it came from, we broke it down for you below with a little assistance from our CEO Andreas Johansson. Still got questions after this? Well, feel free to shoot us a line over on Facebook and Twitter.

So first off, what sets the Gripsholm distillery apart from your average vodka distillery?

Your average distillery has a focus on yield and economy, meaning grain/wheat with the most starch content and redistilling the bi products (= heads, tails and fusel in our terms) in order to extract more alcohol. They also tend to distill excessively and charcoal filter as they value starch content more than the actual raw material, which in our case is wheat. Of course, yields and economy are in our scope as well, but we also have a focus on preserving the heritage of the organically grown wheat. By distilling one time only, we preserve the aromas carried by organic fermented mash in the final product and in our distillery we still get the purity that is required for vodka. Futhermore, we only use organic and non-gmo process aids (if aids are needed), which separates us from the vast majority of distilleries.

How does one separate the heart from the head and tail?

To keep it simple – [it's possible] because heads and tails have different boiling temperatures than the product we want. Hearts is ethanol + the aromas that share this property, boiling point/volatility with ethanol.

A phrase we commonly use here at Kanon is “home is where the heart is.” In our case, we only bottle the very best, aka the heart, at our distillery in Sweden. We also like to say that to know yourself, you have to know where you come from. So last month, we took a trip across the Atlantic and headed to our home, the Gripsholm Distillery (built in the 19th century!) to visit the place where all the magic happens. We took in the sights and got the Kanon experience right at its very (organic) core. Here’s a look at our Swedish adventure filled photo diary.

We love New York, even with it’s sudden rash of natural disasters in the form of earthquake and pending hurricane, but every now and then we just need a (vodka-filled) taste of home! What happens when you put the fashion elite of Sweden on a rooftop terrace with loads of Kanon Vodka and a view of Stockholm City? Look and see. Elle Magazine and Cafe Magazine teamed up to sip cocktails and celebrate Stockholm Fashion Week with Sweden's finest designers, editors and fashion fiends. After carrying our 500 pound Kanon bar up six flights of stairs to the party (yes, we mean business), we were certainly ready for some libation, which came in the form of our "Herbal Verde." With everyone from Elle’s Stina Samolov and Café Magazine’s Daniel Lindström joining us, it's clear that this was the place to be. Check out the photos from the night and our recipe to make your own Herbal Verde at home.

    5 leaves of sage

    1 oz of pineapple juice

    2/3 oz lemon juice

We may or may not get slightly nostalgic every time Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' "Home" comes on our Spotify. We just can't help but be reminded of our Swedish roots. So when Swedish brand Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair invited us along to celebrate their recent runway show, we jumped on board without hesitation. A packed house at Stockholm's Sven Harrys Konstmuseum (so packed in fact that even a few major bloggers had to stand in their tall stilettos to catch a glimpse) took in the show while sipping on Kanon cocktails. We were excited to meet up with friends both old and new – new being ones like Cafe Magazine's Daniel Lindström, and old –  running into our very own FOK, Yvan Rodic. Just in case you weren't all the way in Sweden to experience the event for yourself, we captured the whole night in pictures for you. If you haven’t noticed by now, we love any cause for a celebration. And we have just as much fun in Sweden as we do in the States (you haven't really seen people party until you've watched the Swedes in action –trust us). Our most recent reason to celebrate? Stockholm Pride. Set at outdoor hotspot, Trädgården, we danced and rubbed elbows with a beautiful high-energy crowd that kept the party going strong into the night.

There was dancing, shots of yours truly, LOTS of making out, delicious cocktails, and well, you can see the rest for yourself in the video above. Check out our night celebrating Stockholm Pride Festival–kind of makes you want to book a flight to Sweden, no?

Since Swedish Midsummer ended, most of our partying focus has been squarely in North America, preferably with pools, people, and lots and lots of Kanon. Emphasis on lots. Today we turn our focus back to home and origins as this past week was one raging party on the streets of Stockholm. The Stockholm Pride Festival kicked off and we were there to document the madness that went down. Armed with nothing but organic vodka and a serious lack of inhibition.
